Starfield is all about making friends — and immediately putting them in grave danger. On your adventures across the galaxy, you’ll come across a rogue’s gallery of potential CompanionsYou can also find out more about the following: Members of the crew.
It is a true pleasure to see the variety of passengers and crew. Starfield, and means that everyone’s playthrough will have be a little bit different, depending on who’s rolling with whom.
This is what you should do. Starfield guide, we’ll walk you through how the game’s companions work, how to recruit companions, the difference between crew members and companions, and how to recruit crew members.
What is the role of companions in Starfield and how many are there?

Companions of different types
Not all companions function the same way, so we’ve broken them up into four broad categories:
- Constellation Companions
- Companions optional
- You can hire a companion
- Crew Members
We’ll break down how these companion types differ from each other below, and give you a few character examples.
Starfield has how many companions?
There are many more people than we think. 20 unique companionsPick from among Starfield, it’s not entirely clear what the exact number is. After all, the galaxy is huge and full of people looking for a way to earn a quick dollar or have an exciting adventure.
Your companions can die forever.
Except for one exception in the narrative, we’ve never seen a friend die forever. However, we’ve seen them fall during combat.
The deal here seems to be that companions can fall onto the ground semi-unconscious (they crawl around in a “down-but-not-out” state), and you can revive them. They can get up if the combat is over or a certain amount of time has passed.
But even if you shoot your own companion over and over (on accident or, uh, for science) you can’t permanently remove them from your game. The only way a companion can die is for that aforementioned narrative reason, which we’ll let you look up at your own risk.
Are you able to romance your partner?
It’s true, some of your buddies are romantically compatible. There is no doubt that the four Constellation (excluding Vasco) members can be romanced. Polygon has confirmed Andreja, although there is also a flirting option with Vasco and the three other companions.
As for the rest of your crew, it’s not entirely clear — although we certainly encourage you to give it a shot with Mickey Caviar (yes, that’s a very real name for a possible party member) and report back in the comments.
Constellation Companions
Starfield’s Constellation CompanionsThese are your five main companions. These are fully fleshed out companions and, more than likely, are the ones you’re going to roll with for most of the game. You’ll gather all five of these team members over the course of the main story and they’ll have a lot to say about events in Starfield’s world if you decide to talk to them.
