Sony Has Delayed Half Of Its PlayStation Live-Service Games

Sony revealed that it would acquire Destiny 2 developer Bungie in January 2022 for $3.6 Billion. Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, announced a few days later in his quarterly results presentation that the PlayStation was planning to release more than ten live service games before March 2026. Bungie would be helping Sony with this. In today’s earnings call, Totoki said that only six of the 12 games in its live service will be released by March 2026. This is according to VideoGamesChronicle.
Early this year Bloomberg reported that Bungie was evaluating some of PlayStation’s in-development offerings, including Naughty Dog’s Last of Us multiplayer project, which is reportedly on ice. Sony has reportedly retooled its strategy after evaluating the results of their evaluation. At least six games for live services have been delayed.

PlayStation’s multiplayer offering is well known. In April, it purchased Firewalk Studios to create a AAA-quality multiplayer title. The next Last of Us, should it be released, will also have a Factions multiplayer component. Guerrilla Games is also rumored to be working on an online multiplayer game in Horizon’s world. Bungie also has Marathon in the works, which will not only be on PlayStation 5 but Xbox Series X/S/PC as well.
It will take time to determine which PS5 users will play the six games in their live service by March 2026 and which have been delayed.
