Xbox Celebrates the Disability Communities with New Accessibility Updates

Xbox aims to empower everyone to play the games you want, with the people you want, anywhere you want. This includes over 400M people with disabilities around the globe. With the 2022 Xbox Accessibility Showcase we are celebrating the disability community as well as the numerous organizations and people who work to make gaming easier around the world.

This year, we chose to host the Xbox Accessibility Showcase in the Microsoft Inclusive Tech Lab, which is located on Microsoft’s Redmond, WA campus and intentionally built with accessibility in mind from the ground up. This lab encourages developers and designers alike to include persons with disabilities in their products and services. It also demonstrates how inclusive technology allows everyone to take part. Gaming is no exception. We can make gaming more accessible by making our games and experiences available. This allows people to feel the connection they seek, whether it’s bonding with family members, seeing their own reflection in a game, or helping other gamers discover the joy of gaming.

We asked the Xbox Accessibility Insiders League and Xbox Ambassadors about their hopes for the future accessibility.

  • Accessibility options should be available year round. This includes customization options such as text, subtitles and captions.
  • Consider how important it is to include people with disabilities in design as collaborators as well as as as audience.
  • It is vital to have standardized settings.

Today’s updates are designed to encourage people to play, create and communicate through games as we strive for a future that is accessible. For the next few years we are looking forward to building partnerships with the industry and community in order to make the power behind play more accessible to everyone.

Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service – Players With Disabilities Focus

Since launching the Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service (MGATS) in February 2021, hundreds of Xbox and PC titles have had the accessibility of their titles validated against the Xbox Accessibility Guidelines (XAGs), with feedback from players with disabilities shared and details on Xbox’s Game Accessibility Feature Tags applied. MGATS-Players with Disability (PwD), a new service, is now available for studios that are not yet ready to test across more than 20 XAGs. The service provides feedback to game developers from disabled players on core scenarios, menu navigation and setting in games.

Xbox Accessibility Guidelines – Touch Control Guidance

The Xbox Accessibility Guidelines (XAGs) are a set of best practices that have been developed in partnership with industry experts and members of the Gaming & Disability Community. We launched this month best practices for touch-based interfaces in gaming on mobile devices, based on community feedback. The guidelines cover touch target size and placement, swipe sensitivities, and how to support mobile-native input accessibility.

Collaborate

Creating an accessible gaming experience doesn’t start or end with a single company. This requires a collaborative effort from many people and organizations who are passionate about gaming being accessible. Here are a few organizations Xbox would like to recognize in honor of this year’s Accessibility Showcase:

SpecialEffect: As seen in today’s showcase, SpecialEffect puts fun and inclusion back into the lives of physically disabled people by helping them to play video games. Through the use of innovative technology, they are changing the lives of people with disabilities around the globe. They are driven to increase enjoyment and quality of living by helping others to play video games at their best. Microsoft Rewards members from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada can donate and earn points for SpecialEffect all through October.

RNIB: The Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB), is the UK’s leading sight loss charity. Their services provide practical and emotional support for blind and partially-sighted individuals, as well their families and colleagues. Xbox is pleased to work with RNIB on the support of people blind or partially-sighted in the gaming industry. For the common good of everyone, we look forward to exploring various opportunities and initiatives, in order to welcome more perspectives into our gaming communities.
