Hype for the Elden Ring board game’s Kickstarter is particularly high
The success of Kickstarter’s campaigns has been proven year after year. They can be used to motivate people from around the globe. Particularly board game publishers have become more adept at creating hype around their products. Today’s case in point is the campaign for Elden Ring: The Board Game, from Steamforged Games, which hasn’t even launched yet and is already closing in on big numbers.
In September, the project was officially announced with only the title and rendering of one miniature, Margit, The Fell Omen. Elden Ring’s very first boss monsters. This has helped the British company to gain more than 19,000 fans on its Kickstarter campaign page. Today’s announcement of a launch date for the campaign — Nov. 22 — will likely push them over 20,000 in short order. For comparison, Steamforged’s highest earning campaign so far had just over 31,000 backers when it concluded.
Steamforged’s ability to attract thousands of backers has been possible because it relies on the strong connections that they have made with past customers. In 2016, the company was able to make its debut with a campaign called “Steamforged”. Dark Souls: The Board GameThe campaign raised $5.4 million. It was one of the biggest crowdfunding campaigns on platform history. Since then, the company has seen a steady rise in popularity on Kickstarter with 14 of its successful crowdfunding campaigns raising over $22 million.
It is also notable that most of the projects were for video games licenses. Its products, however, aren’t perfect. Horizon Zero Dawn – The Board GamePublished with numerous errors and omissions. This led to an extensive set of Errata. Although it is fun, Resident Evil 2: The Board Game It was too dark for the table to understand. Early playtests were not successful. Dark Souls: The Board Game Although the process went smoothly, many people found that the end product fell a bit flat. Later, Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game It was filled with contradictions and errors that it had to be printed again.
The company appears to be working to make its products better. Its Epic Encounters line of all-in-one boxed encounters for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons get high marks from Dungeon Masters. Most recently, I had the chance to tinker with Streamforge’s early prototype for Monster Hunter World: The Board Game. The prototype miniatures were excellent and the game play was much better than previous releases. Here’s hoping that this new Elden Ring project, designed for 1-4 players, continues that trend.
