Warhammer 40K’s new edition sets the Tyranids up as the prime threat

Warhammer 40,000It is entering its 10th Edition with simplified rules and tons more models to be painted and deployed by players. But it’s one thing to look at all of these Space Marines, Terminators, and Carnifexes and think they’re pretty cool, and another thing altogether to understand the lore surrounding Why?These minis were assembled for grimdark combat.

Roboute Guilliman is the man in charge of the Imperium of Man’s announcement trailer. Guilliman, a son and daughter of the Emperor Of Mankind was created over 10,000 years ago in a laboratory to aid their father conquering the stars. Guilliman was the first loyalist Primarch to re-join the setting in 40K, and he’s been depresso espresso as he’s tried to haul the crumbling corpse of the Imperium, a parody of his father’s vision, away from the brink of extinction. As the trailer suggests, he’s not optimistic about the current state of things.

He’s right to worry. In recent lore, the Imperium of Man’s biggest concern has been heretical, corrupted Space Marines and the extra-dimensional forces of Chaos. But there’s a new bad boy on the block: the Tyranids. They are among the most fearsome enemies in 40K. Tyranids, unlike Abbadon, the Despoiler, and a deadly Drukhari have no concept of humanity, communication, nor emotion. One thing they want is to consume all your bio-mass in order to produce more Tyranids.

Tyranids are a major threat. There is lore that forces originally arriving in the Milky Way was just the vanguard for a larger fleet. That larger fleet has finally arrived, and it’s hitting the western side of the galaxy. The hive fleets on the eastern side of the galaxy are still a threat — the Milky Way is effectively surrounded. Tyranids want bio-mass. But most importantly they view you as a snacc.

Guilliman, who has most of his forces deployed far from the Milky Way’s western front to combat the Great Rift in the galaxy which split the Imperium into two, makes matters worse. Imperium Sanctus is the only entity that has existed up to now. You will be happierIt is part of the 40K set. The 40K setting is currently infested by a large number of bugs. Even Space Marines who are armed with meltaguns, flamers and can withstand the bug invasion, they find themselves being devoured like bon bons.

It seems that this conflict is going to make up a big part of the narrative for 40K’s 10th edition. Tyranids are likely to be included in the starter box for 10th edition. Space Marine 2This battle pits Ultramarine Captain Titus against an army of Tyranids.

In recent years, the faction also has evolved to include GenestealerCults. This sub-faction is equipped with its own rules and tabletop armies. Genestealer Cults love to stealthily enter a world and find hiding places. Then they preach the good news. They can appear kind and compassionate from the outside. The unfortunate people who are abducted are forced to see the Cults as the good guys. Once they’ve built up a hidden force over generations, the Genestealer Cults attack from the inside and then summon a hive fleet to finish the job.

We’ll likely find out more about the state of the galaxy as 10th edition approaches. The Necrons and Aeldari factions will have their ideas on stopping the Tyranid Swarm. The final Arks of Omen book, detailing the return of loyalist Primarch Lion El’Jonson, will also likely contain some lore as to the current state of the Imperium and how it’s handling its eternal, multi-front war.
