Updated: MLB The Show 22 – Review In Progress (Now With Switch Impressions)
The MLB lockout continued for weeks, putting spring’s annual crack in the bat at risk. The players and league finally came to an understanding, which delayed the start of the season slightly but did not result in any games being lost. The first pitch will be thrown in April 7, which is exactly one week as of the time this article was written. The MLB The Show Series by Sony usually arrives a week or so before MLB Season starts. But this year, the installment will hit the streets on April 5, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox One will also be on the streets on April 5th for Switch.
The PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X and Switch editions have just arrived. This story will continue to be updated throughout the weekend. Sony claims that hitting, pitching and fielding have been improved and audio commentary has come from an entirely different team. You can also participate in an online cooperative game and expect to see improvement in the main avenues of the series, like Franchise, Road to the Show, Diamond Dynasty, and Road to the Show.
Here are my first impressions of the PlayStation 5 version. A short video will be the first. Shohei Ohtani shares more about his journey to baseball. After this, you can fReturning players or new players will receive rewards for returning for another season. These are the rewards I got:

After selecting your team, the main menu will open. Next, you can choose to go into a practice match to see which style of play suits you best. To get back to basics and determine which pitching or batting system you like, I suggest this step.
On the main menu is the new online cooperative mode, which allows players to compete 2v2 and 3v3. It will be my first opportunity to play. The trailer shows you what this mode can offer.
Five missions are required to enter Diamond Dynasty. You will be assigned a default team to use, as always. Here’s mine:

You will be facing the New York Yankees at the bottom of the 9th. With runners on the first and second bases, you are at the plate. My case was different. I sent the first pitch to the right field wall and won the game. As a reward, I was given two cards: Vinny Castilla (72), and Vinny Casilla (72).
The game comes with a 4-day preorder, which means that I could find my teammate quickly for my first collaborative game. In terms of our lineup, we were vastly outmatched. Each player selects a few cards from their collection to be used during the game. This allows you to have Legends that you didn’t earn by yourself. Fernado Tatis Jr. and Rickey Lashley, Joe Mauer were among the cards that our opponents had to open. Giancarlo Stanton and even more power from their line-up.
Matchmaking works quickly. It put me in a team with my friend and I had to search for opponents. In a two-on-two game you and your partner alternate playing bats. When someone scores, the baserunner becomes the player who is not at bat. One player is responsible for fielding. This player also controls pitcher and catch for the entire innings. Other players field. To activate the bullpen, any player may enter the Pause menu. If you are fielding, your view is behind the pitcher until the ball is put in play – allowing for you to get a good look at the pitch locations (you just don’t see your teammate’s meters).
Although there was some latency, it was generally smooth. Our team managed to score 12 runs against their five. Two of their five hits were home runs. Our nine-inning game saw us leave the bases loaded twice. A groundball hit in the middle of a shift ended one scoring opportunity. Final score: 2-0 It was a hard fought battle but the final score was 2-0.
Although the gameplay was smooth and enjoyable, I couldn’t find much visually that had changed from last year. It’s still an amazing game. Each fielding animation was perfect. Player speeds on both the base paths as well as in the field were all right. The pitching/batting contest was just as thrilling. You can check the PCI of your fellow teammate and see how close they are to winning one.
Below is a video of one of my opened packs. Although I don’t yet have 90+ players, I do still own 4,500 studs of Big Dog packs, which allows me to possess one Diamond player, which is rare 90 overall, and base 85-plus. This year’s card designs are amazing, especially when they tie in with the Faces of the Franchise program. The timed event ends in 28 days. Faces of the Franchise has daily moments and Flashback mission moments as well as Legends and Flashback missions. There’s even a boss fight! You can get XP through standard games, collections, or exchanges.
At the conclusion of this program, you will get a Babe Ruth Card. The challenge asks you to complete a mini-season and record a few basic achievements such as five hits.
Although the menus and play avenues for Diamond Dynasty are a little confusing at first, they offer many exciting ways to win rewards and to spend a lot of time.
A few rosters caught my eye and were as up-to-date as I would have hoped. Carlos Marcus Stroman, Correa and Seiya Suzuki are playing for the Minnesota Twins. In order to be promoted from the minors, or signed out of the league like Seiya Sugimoto, rookies must play at least five innings. Keep this in mind as you wait for the MLB season to start Franchise mode and any other roster-based activity. Diamond Dynasty is the best option at this time.

Now for the bad news. MLB The Show 22 on Switch is a complete mess. This is a handheld version of the Switch OLED. The content appears to be the same as that on PlayStation, Xbox, and PlayStation. But the game’s playability in the field is impacted by a slow framerate, and visual flickering. As the ball goes into play, it is easy to be distracted by visual anomalies in the background. For example, the top fence has a strobe-light effect that makes the texture pop in and out. Thankfully, the batting and pitching is not affected by significant framerate drops – meaning it plays well – but the pitcher animation almost looks digitized. Most noticeable frames rate drops happen in broadcast moments. For example, zooming in upon the pitcher immediately after an out.
At the time of writing, there is no patch available for download. I do not know if any are currently available. However, it will be noted that I am unable to connect to the server. Online modes are only available: Franchise, Road to the Show and Exhibition.
