If you’re hungry for another timely, politically charged thriller in the vein of this year’s How to Destroy a PipelineThis taut thriller will appeal to you if it is about the collapse of an Antifa community in Mannheim. Luisa’s (Mala Emde) story is told by a lawyer from a wealthy family, who decides to join an anti-fascist group and fight against the rise in neo-Nazism. Luisa, after recovering details from a burning phone during a protest about a far-right secret demonstration and plotting with another faction in the commune for a more aggressive tactic against oppression. This is a story about growing up on the front lines of political unrest and fascism. It’s also a look at the dilemma of deciding who you will be, but how far you can go in order to defend your values. Next week, the entire world will be affectedThis is important and timely.
Of Good Report
Image: Netflix
Year: 2013
Run time: 1h 49m
Director: Jahmil X.T. Qubeka
Cast: Mothusi Magano, Petronella Tshuma, Tshamano Sebe
The most notable thing about this grisly thriller noir is that it was initially banned in South Africa, before its premier at the Durban International Film Festival on December 31, 2013. Of Good ReportFollows the story of Parker Sithole – a timid and quiet high school English Teacher with a dark past, and an underlying violent nature – who has a secretive affair with Nolitha – a beautiful young woman that turns out to one of his pupils. As their relationship unfolds, the contours of the world as seen through Parker’s eyes twist and morph into a macabre tableau of scenes that confuse past with present, dark fantasy with an even darker reality. Jahmil X.T. Qubeka’s film is disquieting, unsettling, and subtly terrifying before it reveals its more maniacally absurd side in the end. It’s also undoubtedly one of the best thrillers available to stream on Netflix and unlike anything you’ll watch anywhere else.
Piercing
Universal Pictures
Year: 2018
Run time: 1h 22m
Director: Nicolas Pesce
Cast:Christopher Abbott Mia Wasikowska Laia Cost
SanctuaryThe New Psychological thriller Starring Margaret QualleyOnce Upon a Time HollywoodChristopher AbbottPossessorThis month, the VOD version of ), a film about a dominatrix that holds one client captive after she tries to get him out of her house, will also be available. If that premise sounds intriguing to you, bide your time by watching Christopher Abbott’s Other than that,Sadomasochistic Horror thriller about John getting more in one horrific night. Abbott plays Reed, a loving father who harbors violent fantasies. Reed is sent to a prostitution parlor by Mia Wasikowska to express his darkest impulses while on a trip. But when she returns, her self-destructive and unsettling urges are revealed.
The movie has a lot of problems. I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a trigger warning for the 25-minute mark of Piercing, which features a bracing scene of simulated self-harm worthy of the film’s name. If you’re down for watching something a bit conceptually weirder, more obtuse, and more violent than Netflix’s typical fare, this movie is perfect — it’s for anyone who considers themselves a living embodiment of the “Sickos Haha Yes” meme.
