Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny are joining the Alpine Formula 1 team
Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenny and Michael B. Jordan are jumping to Formula 1 after their recent football successes to support another underdog. According to the announcement made by Alpine Racing on Monday, Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Reynolds bought a combined 24% stake in Alpine Racing.
The racing team isn’t even close to Wrexham-levels of underdog, but they’re also far from competitive with the very top teams in Formula 1. Alpine’s team is currently ranked fifth on the Constructors cup standings. Esteban Gasly and Pierre Ocon are respectively rated eighth and nineth out of all 20 Formula 1 racers.
Alpine, which was previously known as Renault before 2021’s rebrand, has had a long and successful history in Formula 1 since 1977. It won 35 races out of 400 in total. The team last saw sustained success in 2005 and 2006, winning both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships with a driving lineup of Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.
Reynolds and McElhenny’s first sporting collaboration came when the duo bought a stake in Wrexham Football Club, an English fifth-tier team. In the documentary, they chronicled their trials and tribulations during their first year of ownership. Wrexham WelcomeThis team has been promoted into the English fourth division of football this past year.
Netflix’s F1 series is a popular reality show that has ties to Alpine. Drive to Survive. That being said, Reynolds production company Maximum Effort Investment is focused on storytelling around Alpine so it’s likely we’ll get some extra content from the team one way or another in the near future — may we suggest Bienvenue à Alpine?
