PS5 system update brings Discord support, 1440p VRR, and more

All PlayStation 5 users can now download the latest PlayStation 5 software update. It includes Discord voice chat, and support for 1440p monitors.

The update, announced at the beginning of February, also includes some quality-of-life enhancements to the PS5’s social and sharing features. All consoles around the world can download Version 7 of PS5’s software.

It allows players to:

Discord voice chats are available from the PS5 console. They’re especially helpful for games that span multiple platforms. Even if the accounts were linked in the past, players must now link them to Discord and PlayStation Network. Discord will be granted the permissions necessary to enable voice chat on PS5.

With variable refresh rate support (VRR), you can enjoy better visual performance with 1440p displays. VRR lets the monitor sync its refresh rate to the console’s frame rate; 1440p VRR monitors are a popular setup for PC gamers, so this helps those whose PS5 sits alongside their rig on a desktop.

You can use voice commands to capture gameplay video clips. The feature is currently in beta for U.S.- and U.K. customers only. They may say, “Hey PlayStation, capture that,” and the console will save a clip, whose length is determined by the user’s current setting.

Players may also direct the console to save a clip of anywhere from 15 seconds to 60Minutes by saying, “Hey PlayStation, capture the last [X] minutes [or seconds].” Voice commands must be enabled from the system menu; they use either a headset microphone, the microphone in a DualSense controller, or one from a PlayStation camera.

Wednesday morning’s PlayStation Blog post has much more on the new functions inside the software update — which includes updating the DualSense controller wirelessly. There’s no need to dig through a maze of cables from the desk drawer for the USB cable you want.
