Nintendo Switch Surpasses 125 Million Units Sold, But Overall Sales Are Down
Nintendo’s latest set of financial reports has been released, covering the fiscal year that ended March 2023. While the Switch has surpassed 125 million units sold – it’s officially at 125.62 million units as of March – both hardware and software sales for the platform are down.
Hardware has decreased from 23.06 millions units sold in Fiscal Year 2020 to 17.97 in Fiscal Year 2030, a decrease of 22.1%. Switch Lite, which sold 2,62 million units, was down by 29.2%. The Switch base model, however, sold 6,14 million over the last fiscal year. Switch Oled sold 9.22 millions units in the past fiscal year, a 54.7% increase.
Nintendo released its financial results, which stated: “Hardware units sales fell year-on-year. Production was severely affected by the global shortages of semiconductors and components in the first half fiscal year. “Although production constraints caused by the shortage of semiconductors and other components were largely resolved in October, hardware unit sales in the second half declined year-on-year in comparison to the same period last year, when Nintendo Switch – Oled Model was released and gave a boost to overall sales of the Nintendo Switch family.”
Nintendo predicts a fall in profits and net sales in Fiscal Year 2024 (which ends March 2020) due to a “reduction in unit sales of Nintendo Switch Hardware and Software” as well as an appreciation in the Japanese Yen exchange rate. While it is more difficult for the company to maintain its sales momentum as Switch enters its 7th year of launch, their goal remains to have “more consumers continue to enjoy Nintendo Switch, resulting in maximum sales.” In other words, Nintendo wants you to play Switch from now until March 2024 – not a different console from the company, which sounds like we shouldn’t expect new hardware before March.
Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switches and 180 millions software copies in Fiscal Year 2024.
The software sales dropped by 9% from the fiscal year before. Nintendo claims that while the new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet releases, Splatoon 3 and Nintendo Switch Sports helped boost its software numbers. It likely experienced a decline in software sales because of its declining hardware unit sales.
These are the updated sales statistics for Nintendo’s latest releases.
- Pokemon Scarlet Violet20.7 Million
- Splatoon 3.10,2 millions
- Nintendo Switch Sport9 Million
- Mario Strikers Battle League: 2 millions
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3The number of 1.6 Million
Nintendo claims that fiscal year 2023 marked the third highest level worldwide of software sales since the launch of the Switch. Sales of digital software increased 12.7% to 48.2%, representing half of the company’s total sales.
