MoviePass relaunches with 4 subscription plans, unlimited option
MoviePass returns. This time, it’s real. Maybe?
MoviePass, the movie subscription service, which was so popular in 2018 and 2019, has been reborn with a brand new plan, a model and an improved life expectancy. After a long beta test, MoviePass will be open to all subscribers starting on May 25.
MoviePass’ first version offered unlimited films for $9.95. It was a deal too good to believe. It was almost true. The company, which had been struggling with profit problems compounded by pandemics and other factors, filed for bankruptcy at the end of 2020. The plans are different this time, and each one has its own set of restrictions. The plans now come with “credits” to redeem, and each individual movie showing is worth a different amount of credits, depending on theater, movie, and timing. A Thursday night premiere of the next Marvel movie, for instance, will probably cost you more than a Tuesday matinee of a movie that’s been in theaters for a couple of months. Unused credits can be rolled over for up to 2 months.
The four monthly plans for everywhere in the United States, except for NYC and Southern California, are: Basic costs $10 a month and gives you 34 credits a month (approximately 1-3 movies); Standard costs $20 a month and gives you 72 credits (3-7 movies); Premium costs $30 a month and gives you 113 credits (5-11) movies; and Pro costs $40 and gives you 640 credits — which should be enough to see one movie a day for 30 days.
MoviePass’ pricing has been adjusted for Southern California and the NYC metro region. There are four plans: Standard, which costs $30 a year and includes 140 credits (3-5 movies), Premium at $40 and is 200 credits per month (5-11 films), and Pro priced at $60 for 1200 credit (30 movies).
There is still an “unlimited” option, according to MoviePass’ news release, though no specific details were shared beyond the promise that the plan will vary from market to market. Polygon reached MoviePass to clarify the situation and will update when they respond.
