Metal Gear Solid board game from CMON announced, pre-orders now live

Metal Gear Solid Board GameIt’s back! IDW Games cancelled the project in 2012, more than two years ago. Zombicide publisher CMON has picked it up — including the original design by Specter Ops creator Emerson Matsuuchi. Konami announced a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3.. There is no word on the release date or whether it will be available in retail.

CMON describes Metal Gear Solid Board Game as a cooperative game of stealth (for one to four players) with an “intricate” narrative. The video game’s Shadow Moses arc can be played out across a 14-mission campaign, or players can dive into a VR Mission book with six stand-alone missions. Board game version of original Metal Gear SolidIt features its most popular characters. Solid Snake is one of them, Meryl the other, Gray Fox and Otacon are playable heroes. Revolver Ocelot and Psycho Mantis as bosses, while Liquid Snake and Vulcan raven as enemies. Two cardboard box minis are included for authentic tactical espionage gameplay.

CMON, a maker of beautiful boardgames for many years now has funded nearly all its best-selling titles on Kickstarter. In April the company finished its 55th Kickstarter campaign, which brought in over $3.8 million. The White Death: ZombicideThe game is a remake of the popular cooperative hack-andslash. But it’s no stranger to licensed games either, with partnerships that range from the Marvel universe to Cyberpunk 2077, Masters of the Universe, and Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Matsuushi’s design dates back to 2018, when the original version of this hidden-movement game (also titled Metal Gear Solid Board Game) Backerkit was launched. The publisher, IDW Games, eventually ran into challenges and canceled the project — a prelude to winding down its games business completely. IDW was stabilized recently under a new chief executive, but Matsuuchi’s game design remains. Polygon contacted IDW to get a comment on the matter, but they declined.

Wednesday’s announcement included a CGI trailer, and the manual for the game — which is still a work in progress — is also available to download. We’ll be revealing more details about this game at the busy conventions of the summer, such as Gen Con next August in Indianapolis.
