Kirby’s Return To Dream Land Deluxe Review – Better Than A Copy

After a lengthy run of titles that were gimmick heavy, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land in 2011 marked the return to traditional platforming. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land has four player co-op as well as a large number of unique copy abilities and creatively designed stages. This is one of the highest-rated games in the series. The new Switch version of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land is an excellent way to get this amazing adventure.

Kirby, his friends and a mysterious interdimensional being called Magolor have crashed-landed on Kirby’s Planet Popstar. It’s now up to Kirby to find the pieces needed to fix Magolor’s ship. In drop-in/drop out cooperative play, players must jump, run and glide through an array of platforming platforms that span several biomes. Although I am glad that co-op remains in the current version, I was disappointed by the lack of online functionality.

Although additional characters can be taken on as Meta Knight, King Dedede and Bandana waddle Dee, each with distinct moves, Kirby is the best because of his ability to absorb the powers of enemies. Every player has the option to assume Kirby’s variant, giving them full access to Return to Dream Land Deluxe’s impressive collection of copy abilities.

Each copy ability can be used from the first release. You have full control over water and electricity as well as fire and snow. Although the elemental skills can be useful in solving environmental problems, they are still more fun than the offensive moves granted by the magic Beam, classic Sword and swift Ninja. The new version adds Sand and Mecha to the game’s copy capabilities. It’s great to blast enemy with Sand and surf, but I also enjoy the powerful Mecha abilities’ lasers, blasters and rockets. The wide range of copy abilities offers a variety of gameplay options that I enjoy.

To encourage exploration, the stages of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe make use of these copy abilities. Although it can be frustrating not to have the right power to grab the tucked-away collectibles, you will often receive heavy-handed tips about how to acquire that ability to move on to the next area. These stages were fun to replay to discover how different paths paid me.

Although Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe doesn’t require a lot of skill, the difficulty ramps up towards the end. I found myself grateful to have been able to master some of my most favorite skills in those instances. Deluxe now offers an optional Magolor Helper mode that will provide extra support if necessary. This allows you to get some additional health or help you escape from pits in the event of a fall. While most experienced players will not need Magolor’s assistance in this feature, it is a great option for those who are less familiar. Extra Mode allows bosses to be stronger than players, while bonus stages make it more challenging.

Kirby's Return To Dream Land Deluxe

Magolor is the central figure of two of the most important additions to the Deluxe package. You can also unlock Extra Mode after you complete the main story. Magolor embarks on an adventure to restore his powers following the events of the previous adventure. Magolor has a projectile-based attack set that is not particularly impressive at first, but you can upgrade your skills through defeating enemies or maintaining combo streaks in order to gain magic orbs. The shorter the story, the more I liked its emphasis on combat. At the end, I was able to pull off huge combos using bombs and spiraling missiles. The boss fights that I have been preparing for in this mode can be quite brutal and make Return to Dream Land Deluxe some of the most difficult games of all time.

Magolor’s job is not all about destroying his enemies. Merry Magoland, a new mode named after him, is about relaxing and enjoying time with friends. You can experience many different subgames, some from the past, and others that are brand new. It could be the chaotic Bomb Rally from Nightmare In Dream Land or the violent Smash Ride from Squeak Squad. I enjoyed the variety of gameplay options offered by this collection. You can earn cosmetic masks featuring the characters of the series by completing missions. This is an interactive in-game system that provides a fun checklist.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, an improved remastering of a Wii-old Wii title, is still a great game. However, it brings forward one the pink puffballs’ best games, with some meaningful additions. It is an excellent game that deserves to be in Switch’s Switch catalogue alongside last year’s fantastic Kirby, and Forgotten Land.
