I am preparing for the Animal Crossing 2.0 update by doing nothing

The Animal Crossing New HorizonsWe are close to the 2.0 update. Lots of us are diligently prepping out islands — from those who have been away and have run down areas to fix, to designers who have filled their islands to the brim and need to make way for farming.

Some of us, including me, have different plans.

My island has a reverse-mullet. Party in the front and straight-laced back. To be clear, by “straight-laced” I mean empty. It’s because I played on the launch date, then quit four months later. And if you think I’ll be prepping before the update, well, you’d be wrong. My brilliant plan is to be able to do absolutely nothing and still have the freedom to do what I please.

At one point, I had grand plans for my island, which I humbly named “Island.” I had been island hopping — I would say to visit “friends,” but that would be a lie. Reddit was a great place to find people who were willing to pay good turnip rates.

My island was meant to be a beacon for strangers. In the hope of sharing them with others, I set up a garden centre where I would grow and display flowers in rows. I pored over hours of Island Tours, trying to find the right alchemy for the front entrance of Island — which currently has a nice mix of gate and bush types. I even made a neighborhood for my villagers. I wanted to become one of those people who placed the furniture outdoors.

However, I was reluctant to put the furniture out. My excitement quickly waned as I became tired. I set out to create a bridge by terraforming the back. And then I just didn’t. And I became too lazy and couldn’t get the pole to cross the two land masses. So I stopped trying. Laziness was just a natural result.

It started to feel like work, which is not how I wanted to play the game — to quote Ali Wong, “I don’t want to lean in. I want to lie down.” All great things take time. And I just didn’t feel like it. For me, no extra Nook Miles nor bells. My island map is a single large cluster of houses at the bottom and lots of empty space higher up. Could I make a farm out of this area? Yes. Do I want to let the weeds take over my farm? You can also do this.

To anyone who has no island update plan, I say: I’m with you.
