How Halo Infinite’s Bots Became So Ruthless And Helped 343 Develop Multiplayer

During the tech test of Halo Infinite that took place this summer, players took to the various maps to get their first taste of 343 Industries’ upcoming free-to-play multiplayer. Although many were impressed by how Halo Infinite’s multiplayer feel true to its roots, not nearly as many players found the experience disappointing.A.I. was so impressive that even ayers couldn’t believe it. The bots were engaged in combat.

When firing up the multiplayer starting today, players can reunite with the bots who likely headshotted them into oblivion through The Academy, a mode that serves as an on-ramp for players looking to enter the competitive fires. “Multiplayer is a scary place,” multiplayer associate creative director Tom French says. “It can be a really brutal experience, and there’s a fantasy that I think a lot of people have – especially if you’ve played anything competitive – where you want to dip your toes in there, but then you get in and you’re shot in the face and you don’t have fun.”

You will find tutorials in the Academy that explain the basics and the canon of the game. Training matches can be entered against any bots, and you have the option to practice your skills at the weapon range. French smiles, saying “Hopefully you can see how capable our bots were.” Our bots are like soldiers, they’re like gamers. We’re proud of them.”

These bots don’t always bring down the players, as they weren’t the dangers that were feared during the tech exam. Instead, these bots in The Academy are designed to ease players into the unforgiving gauntlet of multiplayer. French states that four players are running around crushing bots and is fun. It also helps to learn combat rhythms. Bots were meant to be used as teaching tools, and they needed to mimic player behavior. This was at the heart of all things.

Although the bots were initially created by the team to be used as tools for teaching, after the first few play sessions the studio discovered that the A.I. characters didn’t quite feel like real players. They felt as if they were playing against real human players. Although the bots are capable of performing basic tasks, they cannot do everything you would expect from A.I. The bots can still perform the basic functions of A.I., however they also have some behavioral and strategic tendencies that are similar to human players. This was done by the bots team watching matches with higher-level members of the studio, and then analysing what human players did differently to the bots.

French claims that Halo will see players react with jumping or tramping in certain ways. They returned to their whiteboards, and then they went back. […]They usually develop a strategy within one week and then you start to see the changes in their behavior. While they were initially simpler to use, we set out to make them more user-friendly to model good game behavior and help players play the game.

Players begin to notice that bots are becoming more adept at the game and start to doubt their fairness. French stated that French was aware of the problem and wanted to address it. He says, “Halo (especially multiplayer), has this perception that fairness and balance is important. Our bots also needed to be fair and equal.” Sometimes you see the bots cheating while playing a game. This makes it hard to resist the urge to get your hands on a brick wall. It is like fighting against Elite in the campaign. There’s a lot of mano a mano. What can you do to make the game feel like you’re having a mano-a-mano battle with another player, not just a target that you have to aim at?

Not only was it important to have the bots work in player-facing modes, but 343 Industries’ development team used this technology to their advantage when developing Halo Infinite’s multiplayer component. It is possible for the bots team to see how A.I. behaves on specific maps. The bots team can see how A.I. behaves on specific maps. However, the multiplayer team can also track the flow of maps and how they feel, as well as how strategies change. It is impossible to quantify the impact of bots in multiplayer development. [overstated]Andrew Witts, lead multiplayer designer says it has improved our playtesting ability. It has improved the quality of our iterations in terms of how we discuss the game, how we solve problems as a group and how we communicate them. The player side of things is really exciting to us, but also as a development tool, they cannot be [overstated]They play a huge role in our making these memories.

The bots have many methods of infiltrating the game, including helping developers to playtest the system or helping new players get started with multiplayer. However, anyone who enjoyed the opportunity to really test their skills can expect to see the bot arena return in Halo Infinite’s final release. Halo Infinite attempts to create bots comparable to your level of skill once you have entered a bot-area match.

However, bots from Halo Infinite only make up a tiny part of the whole package. You can find more information about Halo Infinite by clicking the banner below.
