Critical Role’s Candela Obscura series, explained
Critical Role recently released a video introducing a brand-new horror themed actual play series. Candela Obscura. The show is set to debut on Twitch May 25th, 2023 and not only will it feature Anjali Bimani (a favorite recurring guest) but also a host of new guests.Ms. MarvelRobbie DaymondExandria Unlimited), but will also showcase Illuminated Worlds, a brand new tabletop role-playing game system from Critical Role’s Darrington Press publishing arm.
Candela ObscuraThe series follows characters such as criminals, professors, mediums and magicians who come together to battle a chaotic and mysterious magical force. It was announced with a truly atmospheric trailer directed by Taliesin, the father of eldritch. (His Critical Role credits included running The Psychic Theater). The series’ first arc will span multiple episodes, taking players through a world tinged by monsters and the arcane.
What’s a Lightkeeper?
According to a blog post on Critical Role’s website, a Lightkeeper is an “enlightened veteran” of the game world whose role is to guide the other players through the twists and turns of the world. Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson and Bhimani Daymond are joining the cast of Critical Role. The cast members will work together as investigators for the Candela Obscura – an esoteric organization that battles against sinister magic threats. Jaffe, as Lightkeeper will provide prologues at the beginning of every episode to help set up the story for the viewers.
Candela ObscuraThe story takes place on the fictional Fairelands in a valley along the coast of Hale. Hale, on the other side of a long war, is awash in “spiritualism and raucous debauchery” as well as “the sudden influx of technology and wealth” in its central city, Newfaire. The original series was created by Jaffe, Chris Lockey and Spenser (Alice has gone missingRowan HallWilling & Fable() serves as the lead writer and designer, respectively. Steve Failows produced and directed the show with Maxwell James.
What is Illuminated Worlds?
Illuminated Worlds is Darrington Press’ own D6-based RPG system, designed to facilitate shorter, narrative-driven campaign arcs. The Illuminated Worlds system isn’t Critical Role’s first foray into new systems, but Candela Obscura does reflect its notable investment in expanding beyond Dungeons & Dragons with a longer-running actual-play production. You can watch new episodes on Candela Obscura on the last Thursday of each month, starting on May 25 on Critical Role’s Twitch and YouTube channels. The YouTube VOD and podcast episodes will be released two weeks later than the typical Critical Role video.
