It’s been a long time coming, and since the prodigal son of Pallet Town first set off on his quest, he’s traveled through many regions, met many new friends, and caught loads of monsters.
They are not all created equal, despite the fact that the entire thing seems like it’s a simple, easy exercise in continuous, effortless rebooting. So if you’re thinking of going backAnd catching up on Ash’s various tours through the locales of the Pokémon world while playing Pokémon Scarlet and VioletIt doesn’t matter if you are best or worst.
7. Black & White arc (2010-13)
Dub seasons 14-16: Black & White, Black & White: Rival Destinies, Black & White: Adventures in Unova and Beyond
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
Ash’s trek through the Unova region mostly suffers from comparisons to the video games it’s based on. Fifth generation Black/We are whiteAnd Black 2/White 2, offers some of the most engaging bits of storytelling ever found in a Pokémon game. Instead of presenting the entire area as a daunting obstacle, they feel like real attempts at creating narratives and character arcs. You don’t get this sense in the Black & White section of the anime, which translates even the most inspiring bits of Black We are white into a dull grind.
The nature of the show is responsible for a lot of it. The villainous organization of the region, Team Plasma, has built its public mission statement around the idea that Pokémon should be freed from their eternal captivity in the grip of battle-hungry players. In a format like the games, where the lead character’s motives are entirely player-oriented, this can be thoughtful at times. In the anime, though, it simply crashes against the rocks of Ash and his friends’ endless enthusiasm.
Unova is also a fairly diverse region, and the anime just isn’t up to the task of conveying its wonder in a new medium. Two Nintendo DS game pairs pushed the limits of visuals and made Unova the most vibrant place in the franchise. A rather rote representation of Unova immediately wins the consolation prize for seventh.

6. Ruby & Sapphire arc (2002-06)
Dub season 6-9: Advanced Challenge, Advanced Battle and Battle Frontier
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
Ruby Sapphire served as the first real soft reset of Ash’s journey. He left Pikachu behind when he went to Hoenn. It was a complete switch from hand-drawn animation to digital. Just before the end of the arc’s final section, 4Kids Entertainment, an established licensor/localizer dropped its rights. The new voice cast brought a different sound to what was a long-standing tradition for a large number of people.
The Advanced Arc doesn’t bear the weight of its superior video game counterpart as much as Black & White, but much of it does seem to be a series spinning its wheels as it works through the kinks of its new formats. It only really gets a shot in the arm during the last bits in the Battle Frontier, the fourth and final season of this arc, where the show changes to a combat- and contest-focused scale for its main characters’ triumphs. It’s also interesting that Ash wins the title challenge. This is a refreshing change from series in which he rarely sees first.
Pokémon’s Advanced arc is available for digital purchase on Amazon.
5. Diamond and Pearl (2006)-2010
Seasons 10-13 of Dub: Diamond, Pearl, Diamond, Pearl: Battle Dimension. Diamond, Pearl and Pearl. Galactic Battles. Diamond, Pearl. Sinnoh League Victors.
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
While the Advanced was marred by its lack of direction, the Diamond arc and Pearl arc are clear signs that things have changed. While the Pokémon anime has never been praised for its succinctness, the emotional stakes are shoved to the forefront with this new series. Paul is a competitor trainer to Ash and believes only in pure strength. Even Gary Oak and other infamous rivals had some empathy for the monster crew. Paul, on the other hand, is a borderline Poké-warlord.
It is a great way to kick up the battle choreography, especially since Ash and Paul have very different training ideas. Team Galactic’s villainous tactics are another boost. Cyrus’ machinations as the leader of Team Galactic, a cult that seeks to build a new world in which utopia can be established, are seen more as a subplot than a collection of game references.
In fact, Galactic’s plans here might outdo how they’re framed in DiamondAnd Pearl (the games). Thanks to clumsy pacing (which is thankfully rectified in the updated “third version” Pokémon PlatinumMany of these are available at www.amazon.com Diamond Pearl’s overarching story feels cobbled together and then rushed in the last half. In the anime, Team Galactic’s scheme gets an appropriate build and climax, ending with the oddly grim demise of Cyrus as he rushes, alone, into his new dimension.

4. Journeys (2019-present).
Seasons 23-25 of Dub: Journeys, The Series Master Journeys, The Series Ultimate Journeys: The Series

Latest PokémonArc is a radical departure from the previous games, as it tackles its video game counterparts (SwordAnd ShieldIt also incorporates other elements to make it a suitable series as well as a grand finale. The results aren’t perfect, mostly because it aims to accomplish so many things at once. It has to balance big-time tasks such as monster-of-the week and a nostalgia tour along with various tie-in video games. It’s also replete with Pokémon GoAll of it builds up to the World Coronation Series.
One is usually left feeling one of these two emotions after a Journey. episode: “OK?” and “OK!” It is refreshing to see a PokémonIt treated its 25-year-old history with respect, rather than trying to sweep it aside in order to focus on new video game releases. This makes it easy to imagine how a series might look if they were to just focus on the story and not the structure that anime has been stuck in since the beginning. Regardless, Journeys’ highs are some of the best in the series, and by carrying over a version of the more simplistic design style from the Sun & Moon arc (allowing for crisper, more dynamic animation), it often looks beautiful.

3. XY, 2013-16
Dub seasons 17-19: XY, XY: Kalos Quest, XYZ
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
Inside of the Pokémon fandom, there are two wolves. Two Lycanrocs? I suppose. One Lycanroc believes Sun & Moon It is the most animated arc in anime thanks to the amazing animation and character development. Another believes in XY to be the best, a status it earns partly due to its portrayal of Ash Ketchum as a more competent competitor rather than the perpetually naive 10-year-old whose aptitude for Pokémon is rebooted with every series.
This and more attention to romance possibilities between Ash, his female companion Serena led to the creation of XY the air of the “mature” Pokémon series that some fans had always craved. (Before that, Ash and his partner were usually left to the world of fanship. XY They end the show by having a very implied kiss. That reputation is not entirely without merit, and after Black & White, it was nice to have a show with at least some semblance of atmosphere.

2. Original Series (1997-2002).
Seasons 1-5 of Dub: Indigo League. Adventures in the Orange Islands. The Johto Journeys. Johto League Champions. Master Quest.
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
Spanning from the first episode to Ash’s preparations to leave for Hoenn, the original series is broad and ultimately uneven. This first segment, in Kanto is nostalgic and full of energy. It reeks of a series still figuring out its own rules and how it will adhere to the franchise it’s swiftly becoming an important pillar of, so its breed of storytelling remains fun. Plus, the opening theme, with its rallying cry of “I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST, LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS,” still remains the closest thing to an anthem that the franchise has ever devised.
Then it becomes unwieldy. You will not like its diversion into Orange Islands. This setting isn’t based on video games and was created to give the creators of the game some extra time while they work on sequels. And Ash’s traversal through the Johto region can feel downright laborious, so stuffed as it is with an indiscriminate cycle of events that play little to no role in the overarching story.
That said, the story it does try to tell — that of an overeager boy from Pallet Town who yearns to be the greatest Pokémon master and learns to rely on and help others — is the most emotionally effective seen in the anime until the last few years. It is clear that Ash has matured a lot from the boisterous kid who argued with his Pikachu while hiking up to Viridian city.

1. Sun & Moon (2016-19)
Dub seasons 20-22: Sun & Moon, Sun & Moon: Ultra Adventures, Sun & Moon: Ultra Legends
Image: OLM, Inc./The Pokémon Company
The Sun & Moon arc isn’t a reinvention of the Pokémon formula. Ash still wants to catch new monsters, win more battles, tackle new bad guys, and conquer whatever particular region he’s currently walking around in. But thanks to a few aspects, Sun & Moon is a refreshing watch and the best arc in the overall series.
The most noticeable change in the animation style is first. Simplifying the monster and human designs allows for greater energy and dynamism in combat and action sequences. Ash won his first regional championship. Sun Moon Alola region (well. Second His final matches, if you add the Orange Islands League victory), are even more stunning than those previously tried in this series.
There’s also a wider ensemble of main characters, which allows for a greater variety of interpersonal dynamics. Ash’s companions always tend to have their own goals or struggles, but Sun & Moon tries to realize them in a way that’s more personally satisfying. Finally, Sun & Moon has a focus on humor not seen as strongly since the original series. This is perhaps the most important thing for Pikachu, with its lively personality being given a boost that makes it more than a brand mascot.

The best thing about an anime that spans 25 years is its ability to have multiple stories. You can choose which portion you like the best. You can start at the beginning. What number of episodes is there? More than 1200 Huh. That certainly makes things more complicated.
