X-Men’s Mystique has reunited with her Marvel universe wife

For the whole of Marvel’s Krakoan era, there’s been a gay Chekhov’s gun on the mutant mantelpiece in the form of Mystique and her late wife Destiny. Secret cabal members believe that Destiny will be resurrected and that their plans would all go stale. Mystique is just a few hairs away from having it all burnt down.

InfernoThis was a goodbye lap for Jonathan Hickman (architect of the Krakoan Era). Mystique pulled the double-barreled shotgun from the wall and revealed that she had secretly brought her husband back to life.

This week, we got to see it fire — Marvel’s terrifying shapeshifter and her oracular wife are together again for the first time since 1989.

Is there anything else happening inside our favourite comics’ pages? We’ll tell you. Welcome to Monday Funnies, Polygon’s weekly list of the books that our comics editor enjoyed this past week. It’s part society pages of superhero lives, part reading recommendations, part “look at this cool art.” There may be some spoilers. You may not have enough context. There will still be some great comics. This is the latest edition.

“Love brought her back. That and the undying loyalty of wife desperate to be reunited with wife [...] Week three brought forgiveness and a reforged alliance of heart and purpose. For all mutants, but most of all, for each other.” say narration boxes over panels of Destiny comforting Mystique, and the two women kissing passionately in Inferno #2 (2021).

Unlike in 1989, when an editorial ban on queer relationships kept writer Chris Claremont only hinting at Mystique and Destiny’s relationship rather than clearly stating it, Mystique and Destiny’s 2021 reunion is gay as hell. For one, I welcome our new gay mutant power couple.

And I do mean power couple, since Mystique not only resurrected her wife into a young, hot body as a present, she also immediately politic-ed her into a seat on Krakoa’s ruling council. Here we are. ThatIt is an ideal goal in a relationship.

“Fine. Whatever,” Aaron says as he is introduced to his new white-masked roommate in House of Slaughter #1 (2021).

The transition from old to new gays is easy: House of Slaughter #1 is setting up some queer boarding school “and they were roommates” drama — right alongside its “kids training to be secret society monster hunters and maybe the cute guy grows up to to be a monster” drama. Boom Studios believes in this. Children are dying from something audience with this spinoff comic, but then again, that audience is big enough to have gotten Netflix’s attention.

Black Widow, White Widow, Hawkeye, the Winter Soldier and more arrive at the Golden Gate Gala in haute couture in Black Widow #12 (2021).

This panel was the first time I saw it. Black Widow #12 was a very delayed Hellfire Gala tie-in comic, but no, it’s Black Widow, Yelena Belova, Hawkeye, and the Winter Soldier all attending a perfectly normal human party-that’s-clearly-supposed-to-be-the-Met-Gala. All I can say is that I am absolutely for every superhero book going to a fake version of the Met Gala, especially if it’s cover for an elaborate heist, as it is here.

Wonder Woman battles a young girl with a ray gun across the skies of a city. The figures are rendered with flowing skirts and beautifully detailed hair, and only in the colors black, white, and gold in Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #5 (2021).

Anthology books can be hit or miss but there were some real bangers in this week’s Wonder Woman: Black & GoldLike this Trung Le Nayen story (of the highly acclaimed The Magic FishThis is an amazing book.

Kate Pryde fires her laser gun at a pool of melted ice to create oxygen inside an ice structure, while Bishop and Sebastian Shaw start punching each other to build up kinetic energy using their absorption powers in Marauders #25 (2021).

This week MaraudersA number of members of the team are forced out of an aircraft lock by an unknown force. They survive, and win their spaceship back. Propulsive motion for the ice ball

Which is to say, Bishop and Sebastian Stan, who both have the ability to absorb kinetic energy for use later, punched each other a whole bunch until they turned into a freakin’ jet engine for the ice ball. This kind of brilliant mutant teamwork — created by smart writing — is always a pleasure to read.
