What is the Zepotha movie from TikTok, explained
Online users have created a new fictional film. No, I’m not talking about Martin Scorsese’ cult-hit Goncharov. I’m talking about the vibey 1980s horror-thriller movie, Zepotha.
People on the video sharing platform TikTok invented a fake ’80s horror movie they’re calling Zepotha. The app has grown to include a fictional movie that began as a response to videos. It is now a phenomenon. People are now sharing videos of reactions to certain scenes and cosplays, as well organizing stories around the film. The “Zepotha” hashtag has garnered over 76 million views in under two days.
Emily Jeffri is the indie artist who started this trend. Jeffri challenged people last weekend to leave comments on videos saying the character reminded them of someone from a film called Zepotha. In the video, they suggested that people reply to thirst traps with comments like, “omg u look EXACTLY like that one girl from Zepotha.”
“Together we will witness new lore develop main characters will emerge, etc. & we can convince thousands of people that this weirdly titled 80s horror film actually exists,” the text in video said.
This bit ends up taking roots and references to a fake movie called Zepotha Started populating the comments of videos that seemed to be unrelated. It wasn’t long until the comments turned into original content, and people started dreaming up the world of Zepotha. Someone created a tool that lets others know what Zepotha Character they are. Some repurposed the footage to make horror edits. Some people shared their reactions to some of the film’s brutalest moments.
Most people seem to prefer to interact with the film through its characters. Many online users have posted videos of their performances. Zepotha cosplay.
Maria Canals Barrera, actress on popular Disney Channel Show Waverly Place – The WizardsEven the chimes rang out in praise of the ZepothaShe said her daughter looked like Elaine.
Details about the film are vague. It’s supposed to be an 80s‘ horror movie, but fans have only created a short list mentioning the names of the characters. There’s no plot, but certain TikToks do mention a gruesome “forest scene” on occasion. The bit was created more to be a funny gimmick than for people on the internet coming together and creating something original, like what happened when the Ratatouille musical. Because of this, some online are also criticizing the Zepotha joke, and say it’s just a a marketing ploy to advertise Jeffri’s music.
Zepotha Really just sounds like TikTok’s take on Goncharov. They wrote an entire story for GoncharovShared fake scenes and imagined that it was directed by Scorsese. This far, Zepotha hasn’t reached the same depth of planning, and it’s prompted a bit of a rivalry between the two films. It’s now up to both films to hit the theaters to determine which will outsell each other, à la Barbenheimer.
