Watch the first trailer for Netflix’s dizzying original anime movie Bubble

Screenwriter Gen Urobuchi has a strange way of explaining his script for Netflix’s new original anime feature Bubble: “I thought about playing around with a typical mermaid story: Instead of a girl ending up as bubbles after falling in love, why not have a bubble fall in love and transform into a girl?”

That’s a bizarre premise for an anime feature, but the field has certainly produced weirder stories. Take a look at Pui Pui MolcarThe Adventures of Traffic in the Land of Guinea Pigs, which is a story about how traffic works in this land. The talent behind the series is more important than its premise. Bubble: It’s directed by Tetsurô Araki, a longtime stalwart on the Attack on TitanFeaturing character designs, series, movies, OVAs and OVAs Death Note’s Takeshi Obata, and music by Promare’s Hiroyuki Sawano. Urobuchi, the screenwriter behind the award winning film is himself an author. Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

This is the first trailer BubbleIt is somewhat reminiscent of Weathering with You in its vision of a sunny, flooded Toyko that’s being overrun by plants and reclaimed by nature, making it a perfect setting for an idealized love story. The concept of the trailer, in which bubbles that defy gravity drop down onto the city and allow young people to navigate the world three dimensions by leaping between floating bubbles, is more wild platforming than it actually looks. Here’s Netflix’s synopsis, which explains that final segment of the trailer:

Tokyo is the setting for the story. After bubbles breaking the laws of gravity fell upon the globe, it was set in Tokyo. Tokyo, which is cut off from the rest of the world has been transformed into a playground for young people who lost their families. It also serves as an arena for parkour teams as they jump from one building to another. Hibiki, an ace youngster, is famous for his wild playstyle and crashes into the gravitation-bending ocean. Uta appears, with strange powers and saving Hibiki’s lives. A unique sound is heard between them, which they can only hear. What is the reason Uta appeared before Hibiki. The encounter will lead to an amazing revelation that will transform the world.

The debut of Bubble on Netflix will take place on April 28, 2022.
