Updated: MLB The Show 22 – Review In Progress (Now With Switch Impressions)

The MLB lockout continued for weeks, putting spring’s annual crack in the bat at risk. The league and players finally came to an understanding. Although some games were delayed, the rest of the season will not be affected. We are only one week from April 7th, the pitch. The MLB The Show Series is usually released a week before the MLB season starts. However, this year’s edition hits stores just two days prior to the MLB season begins on April 5. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. The first Switch version of MLB The Show was also made available on April 5.

Just got the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions. I will update this story over the weekend and share my initial impressions from my time at the diamond. Sony claims that hitting, pitching and fielding have been improved and audio commentary has come from an entirely different team. You can also participate in an online cooperative game and expect to see improvement in the main avenues of the series, like Franchise, Road to the Show, Diamond Dynasty, and Road to the Show.

Here are my first impressions of the PlayStation 5 version. First, a video. Shohei Ohtani shares more about his journey to baseball. Then, it was time to fYou’ll be rewarded for being a returning player or a newbie. This is what I received.

You can select the team you want to play, then you have the opportunity to choose which game style you prefer. To get back to basics and determine which pitching or batting system you like, I suggest this step.

You can play online multiplayer co-op on our main menu. It will be my first opportunity to play. Below is a trailer that demonstrates what the mode offers.

Five missions are required to enter Diamond Dynasty. The game will give you a default crew to choose from. Here’s mine:

Your first mission will see you facing off against the New York Yankees, in the bottom half of the ninth. With runners on the first and second bases, you are at the plate. My case was different. I sent the first pitch to the right field wall and won the game. Two cards were given to me as rewards: Vinny castilla (72) and Vinny Castellana (72).

The game comes with a 4-day pre-order, which means that I could find my teammate quickly for my first collaborative game. Our lineup was vastly different. Both players choose a couple of cards to use in the game before it starts. Fernado Tatis Jr. and Rickey Lashley, Joe Mauer were among the cards that our opponents had to open. Giancarlo Stanton is another jaw-dropping member of their roster.

Matchmaking works quickly. It put me in a team with my friend and I had to search for opponents.  In a two-on-two game you and your partner alternate playing bats. When someone scores, the player who is not at bat becomes the baserunner. One player is responsible for fielding. This player also controls pitcher and catch for the entire innings. All other players are allowed to field. To activate the bullpen, any player may enter the Pause menu. If you are fielding, your view is behind the pitcher until the ball is put in play – allowing for you to get a good look at the pitch locations (you just don’t see your teammate’s meters).

Although there was some latency, it was generally smooth. Our team managed to score 12 runs against their five. Two of their five hits were home runs. Our nine-inning game saw us leave the bases loaded twice. The groundball was hit to the middle and was a missed scoring chance. It was scored 2-0. Although we tried our best, it was not enough.

Although the gameplay was smooth and enjoyable, I couldn’t find much visually that had changed from last year. It is still quite a fun game. The fielding animations were perfect, the player speeds were just right on the bases, and the pitching/batting match was thrilling as ever. You can check the PCI of your fellow teammate and see how close they are to winning one.

Below is a video of one of my opened packs. While I have no 90-plus players yet, I’m only 4,500 shy of opening a Big Dog pack. This gives me one Diamond player which is rare and 85-plus, as well as a base 90 overall. This year’s card designs are amazing, especially when they tie in with the Faces of the Franchise program. The timer ends in 28 days. Faces of the Franchise features daily moments, Flashback missions and Legends, as well as final boss battles. This battle pass-like path also allows you to earn XP from regular games, collections and trades.

You will receive a Babe Ruth card upon completion of the only program that was available at launch. You will be required to play one game in a mini-season, as well as tally basic achievements such five hits.

Although the menus and play avenues for Diamond Dynasty are a little confusing at first, they offer many exciting ways to win rewards and to spend a lot of time.

A few rosters caught my eye and were as up-to-date as I would have hoped. Carlos Marcus Stroman, Correa and Seiya Suzuki are playing for the Minnesota Twins. In order to be promoted from the minors, or signed out of the league like Seiya Sugimoto, rookies must play five innings. Keep this in mind as you wait for the MLB season to start Franchise mode and any other roster-based activity. Diamond Dynasty is the best option at this time.

Now for the bad news. MLB The Show 22 on Switch is a complete mess. These impressions were made on an OLED Switch in handheld mode. The content appears to be the same as that on PlayStation, Xbox, and PlayStation. But the game’s playability in the field is slowed down by a low framerate, and some visual flickering. The graphical anomaly that distracts me when the ball is in play is the top of the fence with a flashing texture. Thankfully, the batting and pitching is not affected by significant framerate drops – meaning it plays well – but the pitcher animation almost looks digitized. Framerate drops are most evident in broadcast moments like zooming in on the pitcher following an out.

At the time of writing, there is no patch available for download. I do not know if any are currently available. However, it will be noted that I am unable to connect to the server. Only offline modes such as franchise, road to the show, or exhibition are available.

In the coming days, I’ll be playing more Switch version, but will switch back to PlayStation 5 to explore Diamond Dynasty and Franchise mode. Road to the Show is also on my mind. I noticed a difference in the weight of my ball when switching between last year’s and this version. Although it’s difficult to know how this affects play in real life, the feeling of getting weaker wood on a ball is a different one.

Day 5
Diamond Dynasty has always had a great three-inning game format. The new Mini Seasons mode offers great competition against CPU-controlled opponents and good rewards. My first season is 21 games in, but I am only a few games over.500. If the season ends here, however, I would be making the playoff with four other teams. The championship award includes an Evan Longoria card (89), as well as the Diamond Championship Bundle.
