Unveiling the Ferryman: A Journey into Charon’s Design in Smite – An Exclusive Interview with One of the Game Designers
This exclusive interview is with Lermy. He’s a gifted Game Designer and has been involved in the creation of many Gods. SmiteYu Huang is one of the many characters that we have in our game, along with Ishtar. We take a look behind the scenes at the creation of Charon the Ferryman. Lermy sheds some light on Charon’s inspiration, unique traits, and challenges. Smite.
Andy: Lermy – thank you for coming today. You could introduce yourself, and tell us about your role as Game Designer? Smite?
Lermy: It’s a pleasure to be here! I’m Lermy, a Game Designer for Smite. As a member of the team, we work together to create new Gods and provide a thrilling gameplay experience to our players.
Andy: Let’s dive right into Charon, the latest addition to Smite’s God list. What inspired this character?
LermyCharon, the Ferryman of the Underworld is a fascinating character with a deep-rooted mythological background. Charon is the first Ferryman in the Underworld. As such, he was the one who managed the souls after death. Being the son of Nyx or Nox, as some may know her, Charon ensures everything is in order within the realm of the Underworld – mainly on his boat. Using the five rivers of the Underworld, he’ll guide the souls to the afterlife as long as they pay the toll; otherwise, they remain in the Styx.
Andy: Fascinating! Charon is the new character that the team has chosen for the game. Smite?
LermyWe were looking to provide a unique experience for our players after the release Maui, our former Guardian. Maui is quite showy – definitely check out his cinematic if you haven’t had a chance – but with Charon, we aimed for a true neutral character. Charon represents the notion of doing his job in a fair and balanced way. He is a man who wants to punch in at his work place, do his time, and clock out. It was about time we brought Charon, a highly requested character, into the game, especially since the community’s interest grew significantly over time.

Andy: It sounds like the design process was interesting. Would you be able to walk us through how Charon came into being? Smite?
Lermy: Certainly! It all starts with exploring the character’s themes. We gather various departments, provide them with a brief on the character’s traits, and discuss potential concerns. Then, we dive into creating the character’s kit, which can be quite challenging. We develop at least three kits, to allow us to experiment with different characters. Then, we choose the best kit. We then present the final kit to all department heads for their approval. After the kit is approved, Charon will be brought to life by the Charon team.
Andy: Charon’s design seems to stand out among other gods in Smite. How did you manage to balance the scary elements and the desire for him feel special in the game.
Lermy: Balancing Charon’s design was indeed an exciting task. Charon’s appearance is usually depicted in media as decrepit and frail. We wanted to create a unique look for him. Smite. We decided to make him skeletal, a characteristic we hadn’t explored before. In addition, we gave him a bulky appearance, similar to that of a lich Lord, and made sure he looked like he belonged in the Underworld, along with Hades, Persephone, etc. And, of course, we couldn’t overlook the boat. It’s an integral part of Charon’s identity
Andy: Do you have anything else you’d like to say to the community?
LermyCharon’s tank is really special and unique. I believe players will really enjoy seeing him move the souls on the map.
