Unity offices closes for ‘credible death threat’ after week of ire
Unity Technologies has closed several U.S. offices due to a “potential threat,” a Unity spokesperson confirmed to Polygon. A Bloomberg report said offices in Austin, Texas and San Francisco were closed just as Unity CEO John Riccitiello was scheduled to address staff at a company-wide meeting due to what was described as a “credible death threat.”
“Today, we have been made aware of a potential threat to some of our offices,” a Unity spokesperson said in a statement. “We have taken immediate and proactive measures to ensure the safety of our employees, which is our top priority. We are closing our offices today and tomorrow that could be potential targets for this threat, and are fully cooperating with law enforcement on the investigation.”
Polygon has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigations as well as the police departments in both cities to get more information. Kathryn Winters from the San Francisco Police Public Information Officer told Polygon they had received no reports.
Unity’s new pricing structure was announced on Sept. 12th. It adds fees to install video games after certain revenue and download numbers have been met. According to developers, the pricing structure is a disastrous business decision that could potentially put companies at risk. Unity has also been criticized for its poor communication of the new model, which some have said may be in violation of Unity’s own Terms of Service. Dutzende of studios, developers and game publishers have expressed their disapproval for the new policy. Some even threatened to stop using the engine subscription-based if it wasn’t reversed.
