Ubisoft cancels Ghost Recon battle royale game Frontline

On closing the circle Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon FrontlineThis is a battle royale-inspired spin on Ghost Recon, which was first announced in fall. Ubisoft stated that the project was canceled during an investor meeting on Thursday. Splinter Cell VR, which was planned by Ubisoft, was also cancelled.

Ghost Recon Frontline was unveiled last October as a free-to-play game that would send more than 100 players onto a massive battlefield where they’d fight, secure intel, and attempt to survive until they were extracted. Developer Ubisoft Bucharest promised an advanced class system, “unbound tactical freedom,” and strategic gameplay “with multiple ways to outsmart enemy teams and win every fight.”

At the time, the developer stated that Frontline was being “built on core Ghost Recon values,” but response from Ghost Recon fans was widely negative. Backlash to the game’s reveal and premise was swift and intense, and Ubisoft postponed on a planned technical test for FrontlineJust one week later, the announcement was made.

Ghost Recon FrontlineThe game was developed for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It also supports Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. This game was developed as part of Ubisoft’s larger push for free-to-play gaming, including F2P spinoffs from the Tom Clancyverse. The Division Heartland Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. This second game is no longer branded by Tom Clancy and is known now as XDefiant.
