Twilight only made Robert Pattinson better prepared to play The Batman

Robert Pattinson has been transformed into Batman. This means that he spends three hours wandering around Gotham in his all-black costume, solving crime and absolving himself of any responsibility as the head of Wayne Enterprises. The actor does a bangup job of bringing a new Caped Crusader into the cinematic world, enough that it’s easy to forget that his casting was once thought controversial.

Fans complained that Twilight’s dreamboat character could not be the gruff, caped crusader. Pattison’s diverse roles in Twilight have been a testament to his acting abilities. These two factions miss the point. Bruce Wayne is already TheEdward Cullen is a perfect example of evolution. Robert Pattinson is the best person to assume this role.

Isn’t it Byronic?

If you paid attention in high school literature class, you may remember the Byronic hero, but for those of you who have filtered out that information, it’s a core character archetype of Gothic Literature. Broody, tortured and sullen man wandering the moors with a heart full secrets and/or revenge. Sure, sometimes he has a softer side buried deep deep down, but on the outside it’s all brooding in the halls of Forks Community High School — or on the edge of tall buildings.

Batman is a Byronic superhero and Robert Pattinson, who has spent the first four years of his career channeling this energy, is perfectly suited for the role. Pattinson, for example, chose Edward Cullen to play. It is notTo portray Stephenie Meyer’s vampire as the beautiful, amazing man he is

“I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect,” Pattinson infamously told Empire Magazine back when the first movie came out. “I just couldn’t do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that’s how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he’s a 108-year-old virgin so he’s obviously got some issues there.”

He clearly knows how to deal with self-tortured characters. You can think about this: Edward Cullen as well as Batman are both very wealthy. Both are sullen brooders who have been burdened with their pasts. Edward drinks blood, which is why he’s so sad. Batman feels very sad that his parents have died, and Gotham is rife with crime. Both live in big, eccentric houses. In their original media they both had large families, which seems to be lost in pop culture. They’re both tortured bad boys on the outside, but super sad and in need of a hug on the inside — need I go on?

An Opportunity to Put His Teeth into

“Two strong men, each determined and each, in his own way, splendid... two men locked in the most terrible of encounters...and a lovely woman whose tears go unseen...” says the narration boxes as Batman and Ra’s al Ghul strip off their shirts for a sexy desert sword fight in Batman #244 (1972).

BatmanBatman writes in a rather sad notebook. I’m the shadows. He sulks around Wayne Tower and when he puts together his big evidence board — on the floor, for some reason — he does so whilst shirtless, his dark hair flopping dreamily in front of his face. If Edward Cullen were in a thriller, and not romance, he would probably do exactly the same thing. What if the Batman version were actually the subject of paranormal romances?

If he smelled the death of the woman he loves, I’m certain he would also travel to the Vampire Vatican, leaving his shirtless body in the sun so that he could quickly be executed and rejoin his beloved. It’s all about the drama; the commitment to the bit — whether that be saving yourself for 108 years before finding the love of your life or having a shirtless sword fight in the desert with Ra’s al Ghul even though you’re in love with his daughter.

It’s unclear how much time, Pattinson spends as Bruce Wayne in Batman. It could be that there’s nary a gallery opening, charity ball, or public date with a socialite to obfuscate his secret identity in the film. So the jury is still out on whether or not he’s able to translate that Edward Cullen charisma into Gotham’s most beloved member of the himbo riche, Bruce Wayne. It should not come as a surprise that Batman is portrayed by Edward Cullen. There is no better way to prepare for the bat’s mantle than by becoming a vampire.
