The long-awaited indie, Tunic, just released, and it’s one of Game Informer’s best-reviewed titles of 2022 so far. Part of the game’s magic stems from its cryptic nature, and even the simplest things, from where to go to how to use items, can be puzzling. So, having beaten the game and uncovered many of its hidden secrets, I’m ready to dish out some specially constructed hints. These spoiler-free suggestions won’t rob you of the satisfaction of figuring things out for yourself but may just help you avoid pitfalls.

1

The Instruction Booklet has the Answer

Seriously.

As you play through the game, you’ll find pages of a virtual manual that will help expand your understanding of the game. It won’t give anything away – most of it is undeciphered glyphs – but the pages you collect are so important to Tunic’s progression. This element is a marvellous example of how much effort and time went into creating it. If you are stuck, you will almost certainly find the answer right in the book – though perhaps in a place that’s easy to miss.

Every mark in those digital pages has a meaning, so don’t dismiss anything and read the entries carefully. You should also pay close attention to maps within the booklet. Do you see a line? This is a sign that you should be alert to something. The handwritten notes can point to more obscure secrets.

2

Test Every Product

This can be a hard one if you’re like me and want to store up items until the absolute perfect moment. However, in order to figure out what an item does, you’ll want to try it out blind the first time. Just make sure you’re not facing a wall in case something blows up.

Tunic’s greatest asset is its willingness to allow players to consume as much as they like. Use what you’ve got. How some things work won’t be apparent until later, or until you put some pieces together, but don’t stress. If you can’t reveal an object’s secrets immediately, just keep your eyes open for possible solutions.

Remember to check the menu often to ensure you don’t miss a thing. It could be a way to avoid missing an important factor in difficult areas later on.

3

Listen to your instincts

Tunic’s foundation is built on familiar gaming formulas and is so precisely designed that almost nothing is a coincidence. If you feel something is wrong, it’s probably because you are right. Though, you may have to concede if you don’t have the right tools for the job. If that is the case, make sure to note the problem or location so you can return later.

You almost always have what you want. Tunic is a game keenly aware of the medium’s specific visual vocabulary, and many things should set your gaming-senses tingling – don’t ignore them. You should know what to do when you spot a water feature in this community. This is something Tunic won’t let you forget.

4

The Walls Are Watchable

Often, the main obstacles to receiving sparkling rewards are illusions and poorly disguised routes. The few treasure chests that I didn’t find in my first game were actually sealed off. If you find an area is just too suspicious, and you haven’t found any other solution, try taking a page out of Link’s playbook to combat the tricky barrier.

If that doesn’t work, look closely. Although wall design is not very consistent, it’s possible to hide secrets behind odd colors. You’ll perhaps notice that regularity is disrupted in certain places, something you’ll want to investigate further. That being said, don’t bog down your game by scrutinizing every partition you see. Tunic’s design isn’t unduly obtuse, and there will be other signs, usually in the booklet or a chest in plain view, that the wall is blocking your way.

5

You should think souls, not Zelda during combat

Tunic is fairly intuitive –especially if you’ve been playing games for a while. The combat is able to sneak up on you. In a game where all the visual clues point to Zelda, Tunic’s combat plays much more like a Souls title.

Here, you need to be careful and cautious with your attacks. You will lose stamina and allow enemies to score devastating blows if you go in swinging. This can be avoided by slowing down and taking every encounter seriously, no matter how small or large. Try to get a sense of the opponent’s moveset before striking, and battles will go a lot more smoothly.

6

Don’t Keep Fighting That Unbeatable Boss

You’re going to come up against some surprisingly tough boss fights during your playthrough. Don’t feel pressured to beat your head against the wall when it comes to enemies that feel too tough, particularly early in the game. Go off and explore other avenues, and perhaps you’ll find something to help. Find more treasure to exchange for handy consumables. That big bad won’t know what hit it when you charge in with a full arsenal of boss-beating tools.

7

You should think carefully about how you spend currency

Contrary to the previous tip, avoid spending your hard-earned cash on consumables. On defeating any enemy in each level, you will receive spendable treasure. And you won’t lose all your wallet’s contents if you die, so it’s easy to feel flush with funds. You may want to have some savings for more expensive items as you travel the globe. Budget for the unexpected.

8

Rethink Your Viewpoint

Tunic’s isometric view is perfect for concealing little details. At times, it seems that tempting rewards are a bit too far away. Hidden passages can be found behind walls if you’re not careful. There is an easy trick to help you find the answers.

The lock-on button can be used to move your camera even when you’re not engaged in combat. It won’t reveal much, but sometimes the slight angle change can mean the difference between claiming a prize or walking away frustrated.

9

It’s not the right road

In a game defined by secrets, if it feels like you missed something, it’s possible you did. The world of Tunic has many branching paths that make it seem delightfully complex. You may find yourself lost in these narrow paths as you try to decide which route to follow.

The instruction manual – see tip one – will give you a sense of what to expect in each location. So, should you find yourself at the end of an area, you know something important is in this place, and there are no more hints in the book, double-check that you didn’t skip a critical path. Be aware that an isometric view can conceal a key opening into an unknown area.
