Three Horror Games To Keep An Eye On
Guerilla Collective’s Summer Game Fest live stream was an excellent way to see a variety of indie titles. There were several scary games to keep an eye out amongst the Braid-like story adventures and puzzle platformers. These are the games that stood out for us.
The Fridge has a Red Color
The Fridge is Red is easily the most popular stream. It looks exactly like something you would find in Hell if you were to go videogame shopping. Heavily inspired by PlayStation 1 horror games – specifically Silent Hill – it tells the story of Frank, stuck in his basement staring for days at the titular red fridge. Steam’s Steam page states, “Not only does he fear a horrible death but also the possibility of his daughter getting back to him.”
The Fridge is Red is a collection of different horror stories – or “episodes.” The trailer shows us terrifying waiting areas, frozen people, frozen items, glowing patrons in churches, and an elevator that supposedly takes us into the depths of the Underworld. One of the most disturbing moments in the trailer is when an elevator button causes an eye to be gouged.
The Fridge is Red’s minimalist aesthetic is more alarming than the game itself. Due to the lack of detail, our brains fill in the gaps. The screen is nothing when compared with what we see in our heads.
The Fridge is Red is not yet available for purchase, but you can download it now. Steam allows you to download a demo for free.
Signalis
Signalis is still inspired by the PS1 and uses low-poly aesthetics in its scares. You play Elster as a “technician Replika” who is on the hunt for her missing partner and lost dreams. Signalis will take place in the near future. Humans have unearthed a dark secret. I’d assume it’s our job to get to the bottom of whatever that secret is – with all the monsters and jumpscares that come along for the ride.
Signalis trailer exudes a certain vibe. Although it’s creepy, spooky and scary, my favorite thing is the melancholy. This, however, makes the horror even more compelling. Signalis doesn’t look fun, in terms both of its horrors or sadness.
Today’s big news is Signalis’ October 27 release date.
Industria
You can finally play this game right now. Industria isn’t as terrifying as the two previous games but it looks very interesting.
Industria looks like Half-Life 2 meets Dishonored. It’s a “steelpunk” game, set in East Berlin during the Cold War. Our protagonist is shown fighting creepy robots in her search for a lost colleague. She also explores strange and evocative environments.
The trailer for Industria ended with an unexpected surprise. It’s now available. You can play it on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
