The Playdate Hardware Review – Game Informer
Revision
In an era of 4K visuals, 3D spatial audio, and sprawling open-world designs, there’s something oddly refreshing about a new handheld device trying to emulate the earliest Game Boy and Game & Watch experiences. The retro-inspired Playdate handheld is designed to provide novel and pocket-friendly experiences. The Playdate is a bright, friendly handheld with many whimsical games. This is a way to reflect youth and simplicity, much like a childhood friend getting together. Through a variety of entertaining, small-scale activities it aims to be a delight for all who take up the challenge.
Playdate is a great first impression. Although it is tiny and lightweight, the yellow handset feels strong in the hand. It feels clicky and responsive. The side crank, which is the system’s greatest innovation, makes it easy to turn around and round. These speakers sound great and can produce a good volume for their small size. The included adapter allows you to plug any headset that you prefer into the jack. This small screen, which is reflective in white and black, has a nostalgic feel that instantly brings back memories of the first handheld games.

Playdate’s most serious failings include the lack of backlighting and small screens. It might be nostalgic, but I can’t recall ever feeling the need to tilt my screen to get the best lighting. Both problems must be addressed by the Playdate. The Playdate performs best in bright sunlight. A nearby light source, however, is essential for indoor play or late in the afternoon outside. To avoid significant strain on my eyes, even with good vision, regular breaks from playing were essential.
It is simple when necessary, but fun when needed. Robotic buddy who is eager to please handles the intro and navigation to each game. Double-tapping the button will wake it up. Its wide eyes are open. When new games are added to your library they appear as wrapped gifts. The robot will pull open the ribbon to reveal them.

These games are available for download via WiFi. The initial launch also includes access to the 24 full-length games of the first season. The future expansion of the game is likely to be implied by this naming convention. The device can be used by creators even before the later season implied. You can sideload new games with ease. In fact, the package review included Bloom, an entertaining game that focuses on running a florist shop. Although I don’t know enough to make anything worth building, Playdate’s SDK can be downloaded for free so that programmers who are interested in creating unique games will have no barriers.
Panic Inc. is Playdate’s creator and has brought in a diverse group of independent game developers to help it build its first catalog. These small projects are a great representation of a variety genres and game types. These games often use the analog crank to input information, such as text advancement or navigation. Although I enjoy the novelty of it, I am not convinced by its usefulness for precise control.

Playdate arrives in tiny batches within days. Because of their nature, these games will arrive in very small quantities. Playdate is intended to be a slow discovery of joy. You shouldn’t reveal too many details about individual experience. Each player will be drawn to different games. Most rewarding games were those that had simple, throwback design but added modern twists.
Spellcorked allows players to mix reagents and make magical potions, with a twist. Battleship Godius, a 2D space shooter variation, has a crank that allows you to rewind the time when it goes wrong. Executive Golf DX lets you shoot a golf ball upwards the corporate ladder with copy machines and desks as obstacles. I didn’t like every game, but it was fun. These small-scale concept games are likely to catch the attention only of a few players. It’s half the fun of finding these projects. It’s even better if you have a few favorites.

Verdict
Poor lighting can make the experience less enjoyable. Playdates are a great way to meet new friends. Even if you don’t win all of your initial games, the surprises are worth it and they will bring a smile to your face.
