The Overwatch 2 Beta Is Proof That Heroes Never Die

On April 25, Overwatch League (OWL) graphic designer Zenofy took to TwitterInadvertently, I recount the slow-paced resurgence in Overwatch 2 as well as the severe recession that Overwatch 1 experienced with three sobering sentences.

It has been 906 days since the announcement.

767 days since the arrival of our last hero.

1103 Days Since the Last New Map.

PVP Beta launched on PC just 24 hours later. It accumulated over 1.5 million simultaneous viewers on Twitch, which is the most ever recorded for this franchise.

My friend group and I were late to the first game, but when we finally mustered the courage to play competitively, “Beyblade” Meta had started to fade into obscurity, and “Triple Tank” became the standard. It was four years of animated shorts that led to a four-year-long obsession. The best were Honor, Glory+ Rise and Shine. You can also find a lot of great gold weapons, expensive coaching apps, thousands upon thousands of gameplay hours, and many playlists. Overwatch was my favorite game, even though the FPS has been reduced due to content rollouts. Hell, I teared up watching the sequel’s launch trailer (see above). Still, when development details grew scarce and reports of Activision Blizzard’s horrific workplace culture came out, it was right to assume Overwatch 2 was delayed indefinitely. Yet here I am – years later – instalocking Ana and healing my team from cover as if I never left in the first place.

Overwatch 2 is a redemption story for the series. Returning IPs in a hero-shooter genre are rare. I’ve been playing the PvP Beta for under a week now, and the nostalgia factor is palpable. The controversial player count, ability reworks and new arenas might still be a problem for conservative fans. However, the lack of information regarding the PvE mode decoupled is certainly concerning. Nevertheless, I’m confident in the effectiveness of Overwatch’s tried and true formula.

Before the 2-2-2 role queue, “GOATS” Meta plagued quickplay and ranked. The crowd control maneuversets were able to dominate squishy/low damage heroes through incessant stunlocks. Overwatch 2’s hero changes reveal that individual strategies are as significant as team play. Brigitte, Cassidy and Mei no longer paralyze their foes using flashbangs or frost sprays. The tank Doomfist was repurposed to be a tank. It focuses less on the outright elimination of enemies and more on drawing aggrevation. Orisa gallops through arenas in a frenetic pace, impaling opponents with her Javelin and quickly stamping out any weak targets. Bastion has become a more dangerous and mobile threat than it was before. With a Railgun, Sojourn’s primary fire can store devastating energy. Of course, you’ll need to be able to hit your shots to build that raw strength. These character modifications are cleverly designed to create a level playing surface where every team can win and lose.

The original game’s micromanagement is tapered, so 5v5 fights are less drawn out when there are two players on each map. That’s because poking at chokepoints to wait for ultimate charge is no longer necessary when each squad is limited to one Tank. Because engagements can quickly snowball, it is important to position, use of ability and mechanical skills, as well as to win over the opposing team. The design of Overwatch 2’s latest maps and mode, Push, also contributes to the split-second gameplay. Rome’s “Colosseo” and Toronto’s “New Queen Street” contain sprawling alleyways, navigable storefronts, and hidden passages. Flanks are highlighted and the tug of war goal preserves combat momentum. I had some of the most memorable Beta experiences by interacting with these features.

But many of the PvP’s best adjustments aren’t as noticeable. The classic orchestrated sound effects of Overtime are combined with Lo-fi synths. The setting suns provide a backdrop to familiar places with their auburn-shimmering splotches and character portraits that hint at a more mature and grounded aesthetic. New York’s “Midtown” – a futuristic take on my hometown and my favorite new locale – pulsates with neon billboards and hover-car traffic. And while I couldn’t help but be overcome with the same affection I have for the original game, it’s hard to recommend Overwatch 2 to returning fans yearning for a new direction. In many ways, the sequel is a new-gen facelift with several quality-of-life updates, from a much-needed comms menu complete with pings and other callouts to role-based passives that increase survivability while also mitigating carry potential. This Beta has a more balanced gameplay experience than any previous Beta.

No one can predict Overwatch 2’s success, but the impressive Twitch viewer count might foreshadow the popularity resurgence that the franchise desperately needs. The game has enough minor-to-medium-scale changes to keep people excited (I will be one of the launch-day players). The real difference maker will still be a strong story mode and a more nuanced multiplayer personality.
