The New Machines Of Horizon Forbidden West (That We Know So Far)

Horizon Forbidden West’s new setting is teeming with exotic, dangerous, and never-before-seen machines. Guerrilla provided additional information on the previously unveiled robotic creatures. We have already broken down Slitherfang’s terrifying appearance. But, for those who haven’t kept track of the game’s fearsome new faces, here’s a handy round-up of the new machines that have been revealed thus far.

Rollerback

The rollerbacks look like giant armoured armadillos who love to roll. Their massive bodies are folded into balls and then thrown at targets by the fires from their armor-like scales. They can also eject their weights from the scales to be used as projectiles and then magnetically recall them. Additionally, Rollerbacks are even capable of launching themselves airborne. You can find many components under this machine that you could target in order to disable it or slow it down enough to take apart.

Burrower

Guerrilla refers to Burrowers as a fundamental enemy type and the next generation of the Watchers. Burrowers look like an otter and weasel and are agile. They also function as recon machines that use their high-pitched sounds to alert and stun allies. Burrowers can also swim, as per their animal heritage.

Bristleback

Bristlebacks, which look like boars, travel in groups and use their tusks for digging up buried materials. This is their way of grazing. Bristlebacks are peaceful and beautiful to behold from far. The Bristleback will attack if you tick it off. It will combine its recovered scrap and elemental materials to make a devastating ranged assault. You don’t want to be on the wrong end of those tusks, either.

Clamberjaw

Clamberjaws, scavengers with baboon-like appearances and structures, are called Clamberjaws. Thus, they’re as acrobatic as they are aggressive. Clamberjaws are capable of scaling walls as well as a variety of debilitating attacks. It doesn’t help that they often travel in groups, meaning players will need to keep their eyes on the ground and in the trees when dealing with them.

Tremortusk

Tremortusk, a mammoth-like boss monster, was one of the first to be revealed in Horizon Forbidden West. The fortress-like titan can be equipped with heavy weaponry such as cannons, armor plating and high resistance. Tremortusks rival Zero Dawn’s most powerful machines, the Thunderjaw and Stormbird, making it especially worrisome that the human Regalla faction has captured and weaponized them for their own use.

Clawstrider

Clawstriders were among the first of Forbidden West’s new machines, though they briefly appeared in the Horizon comic. The mechanical velociraptors travel in small groups, and they are every bit as dangerous as their extinct cousins. That means it probably won’t be the one you see that gets you; it’ll be the Clawstrider you didn’t know was there. Clawstriders also emit a debilitating sonic “scream” that temporarily stuns Aloy. Clawstriders are able to be mounted, despite their aggressive nature. This is evident in the footage of Regalla soldiers riding on top of them to attack Aloy. This also allows players to override their Clawstrider and ride on their own Clawstrider. The Game Awards’ most recent trailer also showed an alternative that can fire up.

Shellsnapper

We first glimpsed this majestic giant turtle lifting its camouflaged body from a swamp after encountering Aloy in the debut trailer. Although it may seem amazing, the Shellsnapper can be a formidable combat machine and ambush anyone who attempts to invade its territory. The Shellsnapper can also extend its neck and bite prey, such as snapping turtles or fire-pressurized water blasts. There’s also that pesky shell protecting it, meaning players will have to find clever ways of toppling this beast.

Tideripper

The Tideripper is an aquatic creature which resembles a Plesiosaur, and lurks beneath the ocean’s depths. The Tideripper commands the ocean, and it accumulates resources through filtering the sediments. Although they look relatively harmless, Tiderippers are not afraid to attack Aloy either on the ground or in the water.

Sunwing

It is a sight to behold as Sunwing flies across the West. This Pterosaur-like device’s wings are made of flexible sun-absorbing panels. It is likely to provide power for itself. Guerrilla previously said that Sunwings can be vulnerable when they are collecting solar energy, but more alert for threats when stationary.
