The Magic of Christmas: Why Darkside Loves a Good Christmas Case
A good cop-partner relationship is built on clever puzzles and funny dialogue. Darkside DetectiveWe try to do the best for each case, so we are always looking for new ways to improve our services. The possibilities are endless, from ghost gangsters to reverse vampires. Darkside Detective formula many times will be “take something familiar and turn it on its head.” Which is why in the first of our bonus cases for Darkside Detective: Fumbles in the Dark, we’re returning to make our second ever Christmas Case! The Ghosts of Christmas Have PassedDec 24, releases. I thought it might interest to learn a bit more about why we returned to Christmas in this first bonus case.

It might be necessary to dig deeper into this Darkside mindset! The core concept of Darkside DetectiveThere will be an enduring referential way that it tells stories. Darkside Detective assumes you’ve seen the classics. It is likely that you know what a vampire looks like, how ghostbusters work, and what the rules are behind seeing ghosts. Twin Lakes has a lot of worldbuilding. We often take those concepts and make things fun about them. But every Darkside case will riff on classics. It’s going to assume that you’re familiar with the culture so it can then make fun of the culture. Darkside encompasses more than these things. It’s also the small puzzles that break up the dialogue and put a little game into your detective story. It’s also just the undying friendship between a detective and his affable best friend. The world of Darkside is populated by creatures, contraptions, and other concoctions.

This is the answer: Christmas is big in our culture. If you need to refresh your memory, Buy Hard is the best Christmas case ever. Darkside DetectiveGame about Santa and Krampus. Christmas is an important topic. It covers Santa, elves, andthe north pole, sure, but it also covers “A Christmas Carol” and “Home Alone”. This covers both how we celebrate family and the details of holiday traditions. And that size lends itself to a little gamedev team like ours looking at it and saying: “I’ve got another great idea for a Christmas case!” The Ghosts of Christmas Have Passed (which is spiritually inspired more by Charles Dickens than any fables about Kris Kringle) in this way covers a lot of new ground and features perhaps the most complex puzzle in the series’ history.

This second response is more specific: Christmas gives us an opportunity to look at the larger world. Darkside Detective. Although creating new legends and stories for Darkside is a major focus of any case, it’s important to go back and meet up with old characters. Darkside can be much more than a parody or spoof of other similar stories. Darkside has its own world, its own continuity and its own characters to callback to and just like the theme of “A Christmas Carol” is for Scrooge to go connect with the people in his life, it’s a good opportunity for us to go connect with some of those minor characters like Wang, Nigel, Norm Bearson, Gary, Gail, Buzz and Patricia Dooley. How does Pier 13 look in winter? What does Wang like about his cat-and mouse relationship with McQueen & Dooley? What was Gary and Gail’s meet cute like? These are all little stories we can tell when Christmas arrives.

Additionally, Darkside DetectiveThis is an episode-based TV show. It makes perfect sense that each Christmas season should have a special, much like the sci fi and sitcoms. All that complaining aside, let’s get on with the business. Darkside Detective is your style I’d recommend checking out The Ghosts of Christmas Have Passed. If all that bloviating isn’t your style, I’d also recommend checking it out. It’s a must-see for everyone. You can also let us know your thoughts about it in the Discord.
