The High Republic is a big part of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

It would seem impossible to introduce something new into a beloved universe like Star Wars. Can you imagine how hard it is to show someone a new Star Wars droid, city, or planet, and convince them that this thing has been here all along, you just haven’t seen it yet? It’s a crazy idea!

Respawn Entertainment, developers of the game Respawn Entertainment. Star Wars Jedi SurvivorThe team behind the fantastic Star Wars: Episode VII – A New Hope has jumped into the fray with gusto, creating new characters and locations (atop those that are already in the game). Jedi: Fallen OrderStar Wars: The High Republic explores the new era, which is even further removed from the canon of the original films.

The databank’s numerous entries constantly refer to the time period. It’s the time period during which many of the Jedi ruins and Breath Of The Wild-esque shrines you encounter were constructed, and it’s where the game’s villain, Dagan Gera, hails from, as Cal Kestis learns after waking him up from a centuries-long nap in a Bacta tank.

One hand, it’s pretty awesome! Up until now, the High Republic was a part of Star Wars that existed mostly in books and comics. Seeing its iconography in three-dimensional form is pretty cool. Respawn’s inclusion of these elements also signals serious commitment to anyone unsure of how invested Disney-era Star Wars is in this part of the timeline. This narrative change is a good sign for those who are interested in the Disney-era Star Wars storyline.

But also: The High Republic doesn’t particularly You can also say:Nothing yet. The setting is only just starting to be explored in depth (you can read our primer on it here), and while it’s introduced some new characters who’ve already become fan favorites, like the angsty Jedi Elzar Mann or the sentient alien rock Geode (Not a joke! He’s a rock!The stories from the High Republic period haven’t quite established themselves. It’s full of adventures, but still more of a publisher initiative.

Its closest analogue is the Old Republic. Set thousands of year before Hollywood, it featured two highly popular movies. Knights of the Old RepublicIt has video games that are related. This setting now has its own flavor, thanks to books and comics. The High Republic, set only a couple hundred years prior to prequel and original trilogy eras, doesn’t quite have its KOTOR moment yet. Of its various stories — the rise and fall of Jedi space station Starlight Beacon, the growing menace of the Nihil space pirates, and a few Force-related mysteries — it mostly feels like a nice way to hang out with some new Jedi.

Jedi: SurvivorBy bringing in beloved characters, the High Republic is further established as an interesting setting. Jedi: Fallen OrderGet swept up in the history of this place. The High Republic is currently a series of RPG-style sourcebooks that are full of interesting details to delve into, but lack a compelling story. Jedi: SurvivorIt’s a good way to get fans interested in this new setting. But they might be surprised by how much is just potential.
