Let’s play Kabuto Sumo, the beetle wrestling game, on Overboard
It’s not often you encounter a board game that’s hard to compare to anything else you’ve played. Kabuto SumoThis is one such game. This beetle wrestling game looks simple, with pieces being pushed out of the arena. But appearances are deceptive. The game is exciting and unpredictable in just the way you’d want a wrestling match to be, and we had a fantastic time playing it with our special guest Petrana Radulovic on our latest episode of Overboard.
A match is a game of Kabuto Sumo, players attempt to shove their opponent’s wrestling piece out of the arena, either on their own or as a team of two. The players do this by pushing small, medium or large pieces into the board filled with discs and beetles. Usually, this causes one or several pieces to fall out of the game arena. If it’s a player’s beetle piece, they get knocked out, and their opponent wins! But more likely, they’ll just push out a couple of regular pieces, which get added to that player’s supply for future turns.
The closest comparisons we could think of to this “disc pushing” gameplay wasn’t even a board game. Coin-pushing games are common at Chuck E. Cheeses and arcades.

The effort pays off Just click here to learn more.It is worth it to take a risk, if, for example, you are able to push a piece that’s particularly valuable (or perhaps even an opponent), out of the ring while standing in the middle of the arena. This means you and your teammates will be forced to choose whether to go all-in or play it smart. This type of high-risk and high-reward decision-making is what makes the game so exciting. Wrestlers are a source of color, chaos and further confusion. The start of the a Kabuto SumoEach player chooses a wrestler who has two signature moves. This move adds an extra tactical twist to your style of play. Maybe you steal pieces from an opponent that touches your wrestling piece, or you get an extra turn when you’re on the edge of the arena.
You can also use your signature piece to push in the arena, instead of using a standard piece. The signature pieces are very useful but they usually cost a few pieces.
