The German Empire Marches to Italy in a Free Expansion Today
Our WW1 Italian Front FPS has a new expansion IsonzoToday’s release! It’s the first part of our Caporetto season of free expansions, and features a whole new faction with the arrival of the German Empire on the Italian Front, and brings a new map for the Offensive game mode. The Caporetto season will see two additional releases, each featuring a brand new map for linking together in a Caporetto Offensive.
The German faction comes with more than ten new weapons, as well as historically accurate uniforms and equipment. You will be participating in the Twelfth Battle for the Isonzo’s early stages, where German troops attack the Italian positions along the route to Caporetto. Historically it was a military disaster for Italy which brought down the government – but maybe things can go differently with you on the battlefield?

This update includes new equipment and uniforms from the German Empire. Isonzo’s Six classes are available: Assault, Rifleman/Rifleman, Engineer, Officer/Marksman, Mountaineer, and Engineer. For those who aren’t familiar with the game, each class has different weapon, gear and perk options that allow you to specialize your play style within the overall focus of the class. However, Marksmen can be sharpshooters. A lot of it depends on how you load out. A long-range observer and sniper could identify and eliminate high-value targets using a scoped rifle. Or, you can equip armor with body armor and take up a position in the front with devastating mid-range fire. This is a decision that every class can make.

Isonzo’s Signature Offensive mode: One side must attack multiple defense lines and then break them down. A successful attack will be impeded by thick layers of trenches and barbed wire as well as any extra defences that the enemy engineers have put together. Obligations can include capturing and maintaining key points, as well as planting dynamite or heavy artillery gun batteries to disrupt enemy supply stocks.
The new Caporetto map – the first of three in the season – is a huge battlefield based on the strategically important Monte Kolovrat. Five defensive lines are available, with each having two objectives to the attackers. In the Battle of Caporetto, both Austro-Hungarian and German forces participated. Isonzo we’ve chosen to focus on the German contribution, so the map recreates the stunning German advance from the town of Tolmein all the way to Kolovrat Ridge. It’s a damp, overcast day when the attack begins, and the attackers must first cut their way through lines of wire to break into a devastated town – including capturing a church defended by multiple heavy machine gun positions. There are several tactical options in Isonzo to combat such strong points, including smokescreens and snipers as well as rifle grenades and poison gas. As they climb to the summit of Kolovrat Ridge, the German attackers find themselves in a constant uphill struggle. They’ll need to sabotage bunkers and capture command posts while navigating rocky trenches and steep forested slopes. At the penultimate fourth defensive line there is a huge siege mortar to sabotage and a cluster of houses providing cover to the Italian defenders – then it’s one last climb to reach the final objective: Hill 1114. The Germans may take it. If not, then the Italians will be fighting uphill to counterattack.

Of course, things are no walk in the park for the defenders either – although it’s easier to maneuver when going downhill, and it’s much simpler for officers to deploy flares to call in support, the extensive trench lines can become a liability once the Germans get a foothold, providing cover as they advance. German marksmen can pick targets from some of the exposed positions in the Italian defense. Italian engineers must make use of their engineering skills to lay extra wire and place sandbags to stop German assault troops from climbing through trees to flank the trenches using their light machine guns or grenades.
We have already mentioned that the Battle of Caporetto was historically a failure for the Italians. Poor leadership resulted in poorly-motivated and unprepared soldiers falling apart against the combined Austro–Hungarian/German armies that used cutting edge infiltration techniques. It was too late for the Italian troops to withdraw, so they did not retreat. Hundreds of thousands They would surrender. Caporetto was dismissed and replaced with a far better-qualified general who turned the tide for the Italians. In Isonzo, it’s a more fair fight where both sides have an equal chance of winning, if they can use all the tactical options available better than their opponents.
This release also includes other enhancements to the game like a prestige mode, and a higher level cap. For those looking for more visual customization, there are the following options: Royal Units DLC is releasing alongside the free expansion and contains uniforms from the German Kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg. Though part of the German Empire, these states had their own distinctive uniforms which we’ve carefully recreated with the same accuracy and attention to detail as with the other uniforms in the game.

World War One expands to the mountains of the Italian Front – beautiful but deadly in equal measure. Isonzo is inspired by World War One’s battle for the control of Isonzo valley and the Alps.
From the makers of Verdun and Tannenberg…
Participate in historic offensives, including the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo and the Strafexpedition. As the attackers move, the fighting will change through many different terrains in a single offensive. This is reminiscent of actual battles. Everything is recreated based on research and field trips, from sound effects and uniforms down to the houses, vineyards and trenches you’ll be fighting over.
With the brand new game mode Offensive, you are right there with the key historical offensives of the Italian Front. Lead the charge across stunning Italian landscapes as you choose your path to victory – cut paths through barbed wire, flank your enemies by following mountain trails, or man a mortar to blast a way through. Laying sandbags and wire and placing ammo containers, as well as deploying trench-periscopes and sniper shields can help to create an exciting battlefield.
You can call in help with our unique flare system. These flare guns can either mark targets for artillery, biplane flybys or other purposes. Or you can use different colors of flares to aid your team. Once the big guns have softened up the enemy, finish the job at close quarters with an Arditi dagger or mountaineer’s pickaxe. Heavy machine guns, mortars, and mountain guns can be used to provide more fire support.
Select from six historical combat roles to build your loadout. You will have the option of a range of equipment and weapons that can be used, as well as perks. These accessories allow you flexibility and variety, while still keeping in line with what soldiers may have carried. You’ll be operating wire cutters, bandaging yourself and wounded teammates, and blowing the whistle to start an assault. Even minor wounds can quickly lead to death.
It’s not enough to be a skilled marksman in order to make an Isonzo soldier effective. Mastering the terrain is also key – the mountain can be a friend or foe. To surprise or assist your friends and enemies, you must be able to properly navigate.
Finally… watch out for the dreaded poison gas. You’ve never experienced WW1 action quite like this!
