The Black Phone, new Orphan, Vikram, and every other new movie to watch at home

There isn’t much to report this week on new films.

Sure, Netflix has its usual slate of seven new movies, but beyond that, it’s the dry season of August in the yearly movie calendar. There are still some interesting new films to be seen at home. A light week means that you have 15 movies to choose from.

The new horror films, the “The Witcher,” are leading the charge. Orphan Prequel First Kill on Paramount Plus sees Isabelle Fuhrman return to the franchise more than a decade later, and Scott Derrickson’s new horror movie Black PhoneWith Ethan Hawke silently dropping on Peacock.

One of the year’s best action thrillers also makes its streaming debut: VikramThe 2022 Tamil-language film with the highest grossing movie. It’s the follow-up to the 2019 thriller KaithiThis is great, and I can’t wait to catch it on the weekend.

There’s also Jurassic World DominionAn animated version of Blazing Saddles B.J. Novak’s podcast mystery thriller Vengeance available for digital rental or purchase, and among the many new Netflix releases, there’s a coming-of-age movie with Riverdale Lili Reinhart stars as the star, with an action-packed Malaysian movie by director Wira.

Let’s get into it!

Black Phone

Ethan Hawke wearing a horned devil mask in The Black Phone (2022).

Universal Pictures

Scott Derrickson’s first movie since Doctor Strange sees him return to his horror roots, teaming up with Ethan Hawke for this adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story. Hawke is a masked killer who abducts, kills children. The latest abduction victim (Mason Thames) comes from a family who may have supernatural abilities, and he is able to talk to the killer’s past victims on a disconnected phone in the basement where he is being held prisoner.

Our review:

However, outside of the sensation of morbid inevitability Black Phone The result is messy. Performances are the problem. Jeremy Davies is especially bad as Finney and Gwen’s drunk dad, whose slurring and screaming doesn’t register as authentically patheticOr threatening. Hawke can also be too scattered to make it crediblely frightening. We first meet The Grabber when his face was painted white. His voice is high and affective, reminding us of The Grabber. Atlanta’s Teddy Perkins. Weird, right? What’s he trying to signify, and how does it fit into his psychosis? Doesn’t matter — that’s the first and last time that character detail will crop up in the film.

Jurassic World Dominion

A raptor chases Chris Whatshisname on a motorcycle in Jurassic World: Dominion

Universal Pictures

With the last movie in the Jurassic World trilogy, Colin Trevorrow returns to the director’s chair after merely co-writing the second entry. Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt return to their roles as the World characters, while more actors from the original Jurassic films are back. Jeff Goldblum is back. Sam Neill and Laura Dern are also making thrilling returns to the series.

Our review:

DominionGrant, Dern and Goldblum wander around another high-tech facility that is adjacent to another refuge for dinos. Colin Trevorrow who wrote and directed the initial film. Jurassic WorldCo-wrote and returned to direct the second. He has too much respect for the original. Jurassic Park to resist a return trip to the jungle, even if it’s a different jungle. Perhaps he is too reverent for the full-stop original. Dominion He is a busy man, with many curtain calls and callbacks. Soon, he becomes too obsessed with showing old favorites dinosaurs as well as new threats. He runs out of room to actually build setpieces. Which is too bad, because the ones he does assemble are mostly great fun, full of special-effects work that doesn’t feel green-screened into the Uncanny Valley.

Vengeance

B.J. Novak stars and directs this film about a man who attempts to solve the crime of a girl that he knows… podcast-style.

Our review:

At first, it seems like the movie might treat podcasting as a sour punchline — a stand-in for Ben’s empty, self-impressed striving. The film addresses much more than podcasting at the end. At times, VengeanceIt appears that he is aiming at omnidirectional comedy with some empathy. This reminds me of the Alexander Payne films. But it often looks more like a hall full of mirrors with many culture-clash illusions appearing to wave at each other in self aware acknowledgment.

The Legend of Hank: Paws of Fury

This movie is an animated adaptation of Mel Brooks’ classic comedy Blazing SaddlesIt’s samurai-oriented instead of Western. Yes, really!

Our review:

Yet there is value in a silly kids’ cartoon that cares enough to string together a series of gags. Big-studio cartoons often create noisy and busy set-pieces with lots of slapstick. However, in Fury Paws, most of the jokes feel like mischievous throwaways, training kids’ ears for comedy rather than numbing them with junior-level spectacle. You will find many ridiculous cat puns. There’s some knowingly absurd, anachronistic dialogue. (When one character lists “cars and curiosity” as prominent killers of cats, another asks, “What are cars?” prompting an inevitable scolding for his curiosity.) And the characters repeatedly reference how the movie needs to run “85 minutes, not including end credits.”
