The 5 best horror movies to watch on Netflix this March

A new month is a great reason to see horror films.

Our year-long obsession with horror films is Polygon. Sure, we’ve got our list of the best horror movies you can watch now, or the best horror movies of 2023 ranked by scariness. We also compile five smaller lists each month that we think are great for this time of the year.

This month, we’ve picked out five great horror movies for you to watch on Netflix. Some have cast members or people working behind the scenes of this month’s most exciting new release, John Wick Chapter 4.Other examples are creatives with newly-announced projects. Many of these are appropriate for the season. Some are just right for the season and can be a great watch.

Without further ado, let’s dig into it.

Year: 2007
Run time: 2h 6m
Director: Frank Darabont
Cast: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden

The MistIt is one of the finest semi-recent Stephen King films and boasts the greatest ending of any horror movie of this century. It follows the story of a small group trapped in a grocery store when an ominous and potentially deadly mist envelopes their town. The movie draws heavily from the horror of real people dealing with crises and lets supermarket survivors become their little world. Lord of the Flies situation before revealing that something is lurking inside the mist that’s far more dangerous and scary than their petty differences. —Austen Goslin

Pitch Black

Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick facing the camera wearing goggles and a black tank top with sand in the background

Year: 2000
Run time: 1h 49m
Director: David Twohy
Cast: Vin Diesel, Cole Hauser, Keith David

Pitch BlackFollow a crew of space travellers when their craft crashes on an alien world. They are unfortunate to find out that one of their passengers, Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel), is an alien prisoner. And he isn’t thrilled that he was captured in the first place.

Riddick ranks among our strangest franchises, in large part due to the short film that introduced him to the rest of the world. Vin Diesel’s half slasher-movie monster, half space-opera antihero has humble beginnings in Pitch Black, where he’s essentially a Xenomorph disguised as a human. He takes out his most dangerous captors in the first half, while the second part is about him trying to survive on an alien planet. Because Riddick doesn’t know any better, it becomes clear that there are far more dangers on this planet. — AG

Resident Evil

Year: 2002
Run time: 1h 40m
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius

Alice is an elite soldier assigned to defend the Hive, which houses a genetic research center. This movie marks the beginning of Resident Evil. Alice is forced to enter the Hive and repair the damage done by a group special operations commandos.

It’s been years since the Resident Evil movies got the reevaluation they deserve and the recognition as the fun and often excellent movies they are — regardless of how closely they follow the games they’re named after. Paul W.S. is the best of all series. Anderson’s first Resident Evil movie earns an extra-special mention for its slick style and horror-heist combo — though it isn’t the only one of those on this list. —AG

Year: 2022
Run time: 1h 53m
Director: J.J. Perry
Cast: Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco, Natasha Liu Bordizzo

Day Shift This is a charming action-horror-comedy blend and an ode to the past of mid-budget filmmaking. In it, Jamie Foxx plays a vampire hunter on the outs with the vampire hunter union, and he’s looking for a big score… but is paired with a hapless office worker (Dave Franco).

Comedy, in all honesty, can be very funny. Day ShiftHowever, the action is more exciting than whip. The movie features some amazing camera moves and contortionists that bring out the best in vampires. J.J. Perry makes his feature film debut as a legend stuntman/fight choreographer. He was also responsible for stunts in the movie “The Last Stand”. John WickAs a Supervising Stunt Coordinator for the sequel, he was also involved in its production. He brings that skill and experience behind the camera to create one of Netflix’s best action movies to date. You can’t go wrong with a Snoop Dogg guest appearance. It is a genre-mashing experience. And with the new John Wick out this weekend, there’s no better time for a J.J. Perry action-horror mashup than now. —Pete Volk

Army of the Dead

Year: 2021
Run time: 2h 28m
Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera

Yeah, you’re getting two action-horror recommendations from me, but what can I say? I am a huge fan of action films.

Two months have passed since the release of his long-awaited book Justice League cut, Snyder’s first post-DC Universe project came out on Netflix. The genre mashup in this one goes deeper than just “action/horror” — it’s a zombie flick mixed with a casino heist movie. Dave Bautista gives a stellar performance. Army of the Dead It’s a popcorn flick with an impressive cast. John Wick: Chapter 4 Hiroyuki Sanada is the co-star Yellowjackets Ella Purnell), which features a number of thrilling sets and an emotionally charged father-daughter partnership. The movie also inspired a sequel. Army of ThievesThis is less bad (but not all horror), but it’s still quite entertaining.

Snyder recently let slip that he’s making a “ridiculous scale” video game RPG based on his upcoming Netflix sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. A further reason to be on the lookout Army of the Dead this weekend. —PV
