Super Replay | Mortal Kombat (2011)

With Mortal Kombat 1 out in the wild we’re revisiting the entry that set the series on its current trajectory: 2011’s Mortal Kombat (aka MK 9). We’ll take you on a journey of blood and destruction through this game’s story.  

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, released in 2006, seemed to end the story of Mortal Kombat. 2011’s installment picked up where it left off. The saga was moved forward with a reset of the timeline. It served as a “soft reboot” that took Mortal Kombat to its 2D roots, and brought back the classic roster. MK 9’s cinematic campaign mode was a turning point for both the fighting game series as well as the entire genre, and set the standard for today’s narrative campaigns. MK9 also acts as the foundation for Mortal Kombat 1 by building on the story of MK9.
