Stray Is Getting An Animated Movie

Stray, which was first released last July and became a huge hit in the independent game world, is now heading to the cinema. Annapurna, the publisher of Stray announced that it plans to create an animated film based on this hit independent game.

The Persistence of the People Entertainment WeeklyAnnapurna Animation is the new animation division of the company. It follows up on its first feature film. NimonaA film version of 2022, the adventure game is in development. It will be the first game in Annapurna Interactive’s roster of titles to get the cinematic treatment, and according to the publisher, it won’t be the last. Annapurna is yet to reveal the director, cast or release date for its Stray movie. Annapurna Animation is led by former Disney Animation executives Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein. 

“This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it,” Baird tells EW. It’s a buddy-comedy about a robotic cat, with a really funny dynamic. There’s a lot of comedy in the movie, but not a single human is in it. The fact that the cat is the one who sees the world makes the game so appealing. How were they able to do that, and will we be able to achieve that in the film? “We will do it, even if sometimes the task seems impossible. We know this is the essential of the game, and key to telling the tale.”

Stray, developed by BlueTwelve in France. The game takes place on a planet without any humans. Players control a cat, who is separated from friends. The cat’s journey takes it through cities occupied by sentient robots, which it befriends along the way, namely a flying drone named B-12. Stray is among the best-known games, having won the Best Debut Indie award at the Game Awards. It was also released last month on Xbox. Our review of Stray can be found here.
