Star Trek: Picard deserves a spinoff sequel series, Star Trek: Legacy

The week before, Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas tweetedAbout his spinoff idea called Star Trek: Legacy. This series, which would focus on old favourites and newer generations, would take place in the year 25th century. It can be very hard to tell what’s successful these days because streaming numbers are opaque. Paramount Plus, based on internet chatter and reviews from critics, is clearly a hit. Star Trek: Picard’s third season.

The cast and Matalas have asked people to check out the new season since the beginning. It is clear that they care about the number of viewers if Trekkers want to see more Trek. Paramount Plus seems to have the rare show where critics are not enraged. viewers happy, one that’s welcoming to new fans but also hits those deep wells of nostalgia. It’s what we strive to achieve. Not requiredIn the Star Trek series. It’s good for viewers, it’s good for the network, it grounds the “next generation” of shows with something tied into the overarching mythology of a time period that people feel nostalgic about and want to see more of. It’s the rare marriage of giving the fans what they want andGood business.

The question is, then, why hasn’t it been greenlit already? Stars of the show even appear to be on board.

One possible answer is the unexpected cancelling Star Trek: DiscoveryParamount is currently discussing cost-cutting options. It is also known that Paramount has a significant number of employees. AreThere are new shows in development: An upcoming Starfleet Academy episode, an improbable Section 31-starring Michelle Yeoh show and others. As these shows are expected to be released sooner than anticipated, Star Trek: PicardIt ends with season 3.

It’s clear that Star Trek is here to stay, in whatever form (and to be clear: It’s All Star Trek, even if you don’t especially like it). With the rumors and speculations about the announcements, there are questions as to what the future might hold for the franchise. It could be the past like it was with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds? It will be in Star Trek: Discovery’s future? Or will it be in what many people consider the “present,” the 25th century?

The tension that comes with any long-running franchise lies in how you satisfy your long-standing viewers while still welcoming new viewers. Star Wars clearly faces this dilemma, as it tells a significant part of the story. Mandalorian’s story from this season in another show altogether.) Under Alex Kurtzman’s watchful eye, the Star Trek franchise has balanced this incredibly well so far. Star Trek: DiscoveryWhile charting its own course, it was not a monopoly. Strange New WorldsIt has beautifully balanced creative storytelling and canon. Animations are a great way to entertain. Lower DecksAnd ProdigyWhile they build on the previous stories, don’t be afraid to create their own narratives. The relationships between these different shows and Star Trek history are important. Canon must be open to new ideas.

Within this umbrella, though, there’s room for a show that caters to longtime fans to replace Star Trek: Picard. I’m not talking about the fringes of the fandom irate about inclusivity and representation in shows like Discovery. I’m talking about the people who grew up on ’90s Trek who want to see their favorites (and their favorites’ kids!) The bridge of a starship. It seems as though there’s a reluctance to exist too long within that “present.” Maybe, to those in charge, it feels as though we’ve spent too much time here because of 1990s Trek, but I’d argue that whether you’ve spent a lot of your life watching the franchise or are relatively new to it, the 25th century has a special place in your heart.

It doesn’t have to be strictly nostalgia for a legacy series to work, either. Terry Matalas is the one who has presented with the third season. Star Trek: Picard that he can balance fan service with genuinely good, creative storytelling that adds dimension to characters we’ve known all our lives. These don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and in fact, this kind of show can be brilliantly good.
