Speedrunner beats Ocarina of Time with the Smash Bros. Brawl demo

The ingenuity and skill of speedrunners is unmatched. A streamer, Savestate, beat all of Sunday’s runners. In doing so, the streamer found the perfect version of the game to speedrun, and finished it off in under four minutes — half the time of the current world record for the full version of Ocarina

In case you weren’t familiar with it, Super Smash Bros.There are a number of demos that allow you to try out the various fighters it has made popular. A demo of Link and other Zelda characters is included. Ocarinas of Time on Nintendo 64. Even though the demo has a limit of five minutes to play, it was enough for Savestate and Savestate were able beat the timer. BrawlThis was the ideal game for speedrunning. Even though the time limit is five minutes long, Savestate still managed to beat it.

Savestate finished an Any% run — completing a game as fast as possible, with bugs and glitches permitted — in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds. The full version is available at Ocarina PaintSkate8 holds the current world record for Any% at 6 minutes, 49 second.

The Brawl Demo Ocarina doesn’t start at the very beginning. You can find it at the Temple of Time. There are some items preloaded, such as the hookshot. Savestate’s run starts at the Temple of Time. Then, it jumps backwards across Hyrule Field and to the Lost Woods. Finally, Savestate glitches through the woods until the end of game. The video below shows the incredible run.

The demo’s choice of starting point cuts down a lot of the work at the full game’s beginning. Also, it helps to give Link bombs immediately, which are helpful for quickly launching Link or exploiting bugs. Speedrunning rules must be precise, so they are created game-by-game. The most popular speedrun games also have “category extensions,” which reflect the most popular ways to complete the games under certain conditions (100% completion, for example, or acquiring all or none of a certain collectible).

Currently, there’s no category extension for the Brawl Demo Ocarinas of Time SpeedRun.com. It’s arguably an entirely different game, altogether, although there’s no listing for the demo by itself, either.

But it’s still impressive, and it shows just all the fun nooks and crannies people can explore, even decades after a game’s release, in finding newer and faster ways of playing it.
