Sony’s own Game Pass, called Spartacus, coming to PS4 and PS5 in 2022

Sony is reportedly planning a new subscription service aimed at competing with Microsoft’s popular Xbox Game Pass, according to Bloomberg. According to Bloomberg, Spartacus is the codename for this unannounced subscription that could give access to classic PlayStation games along with existing PlayStation Plus benefits.

Bloomberg reported that Spartacus will merge two services: PlayStation Plus (which unlocks online multiplayer for many PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 games) and PlayStation Now (which gives subscribers streaming access to cloud-gaming games).

Bloomberg reports that the new PlayStation subscription would keep the PlayStation Plus brand. Only the top level of the PlayStation Plus membership would have access to the retro PS1 and PS2 games, as well as the PlayStation Portable.

Polygon has reached out to Sony for comment on Bloomberg’s report and will update when the company responds.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription services launched in 2010, and initially offered subscribers access to digital bonuses like free games, game trials, and other perks for $49.99 per year. PlayStation Plus was later required for online PlayStation 4 play and the annual cost of a subscription rose to $59.99. PlayStation Now subscriptions cost $59.99 per year. Bloomberg’s report did not offer details on planned pricing for Spartacus, which is said to launch in spring 2022.
