Sony PlayStation Portal streaming handheld price announced

Sony revealed new details about the Remote Play focused handheld that is part of PlayStation 5. The device has been officially named PlayStation Portal Remote player. It’ll cost $199.99 in the United States, and will ship later this year. Sony has promised more details, including a possible release date (and hopefully more than just still photos of the product), once pre-orders are available.

The DualSense Controller’s adaptive triggers, haptics, and pull-resistant sensitivity are all incorporated into the 8-inch LCD display, which is wedged in between two halves. The screen can display a max frame rate of 60 frames per second, and it supports touch, which can be used in PS5 games to mimic the DualSense’s touchpad commands.

As we already knew, the PlayStation Portal can’t play games on its own — it’s a mirroring device that requires you to pair it via Wi-Fi to your PS5. It can, therefore, play installed games (not streams) on your PS5. It should go without saying, but PSVR 2 games aren’t supported here.

A 3.5mm jack is included on the PlayStation Portal for listening to music privately. Volume buttons are located on the right side of the screen, with a PlayStation Link (for connecting accessories) button at the left. According to Sony’s own hands-on blog for the Portal, wiring your PS5 via ethernet will ensure the best visual fidelity on the handheld, but it can connect over 5 GHz and “other wi-fi channels, too.”

Today’s detail dump of the Portal also brought news of some new audio accessories made for the PS5 and the Portal. Pulse Elite Wireless Headset is a significant upgrade to the Pulse 3D. The headset offers lossless sound, retractable boom microphones (the Pulse 3D comes with built-in micros) and AI enhanced noise cancellation. It will cost $149.99 — $50 more than the Pulse 3D. The Pulse Explore true wireless gaming headphones for PS5 or Portal, priced at $199.99, will offer many of these features in a more compact, portable package. Sony is planning to announce the release date and pre-order for both devices soon.
