Sony Names PlayStation VR2, Announces Horizon Call Of The Mountain At CES 2022

At its CES 2022 conference this evening, Sony announced talked about its upcoming VR headset and announced a new Horizon game for the device.

Sony President Jim Ryan addressed the press to provide details about the next generation of virtual reality devices. Officially, PlayStation VR2 is the successor to its PSVR. The controllers of the PlayStation VR2 Sense Controllers have been replaced by Move wands. Ryan talked about how the headset gave him a stronger sense of presence, and increased visual fidelity over the older model. 

The PlayStation Blog has posted technical specifications for PSVR2, which includes a lot of interesting information about controllers and headsets. PSVR2 will come with OLED screens of 2000×2040 resolution per eye, which can run at 90hz and 120hz. Cameras on the outside of the headset can be used to locate your controllers and possibly place them in a room. IR sensors will track eye movement inside. Vibration feedback is another feature that should not be missed. This is a great way to experience a whole new level of immersion.

The PSVR2 Sense Controllers look to have split the classic face buttons across both controllers, with each Sense unit having two of the PS shapes represented. The controllers are equipped with capacitive and IR sensors for finger tracking, while the L2 and R2 buttons will have the DualSense’s Trigger Effect haptics system with changes the tension needed to press the buttons in.

The announcement of the PSVR2’s first game was made during the CES presentation. Horizon Call of the Mountain, a VR game created in collaboration with Firesprite and Guerilla Games (The Playroom VR. The Persistence VR). One clip showed how a man removed what looked like a blindfold from the player’s forehead, opening up a forest full of tall trees. A Tallneck appears as they paddle a boat along a river. It is a spectacular moment while wearing the VR headset.
