Sonic Origins Plus Adds Amy As Playable Character, Game Gear Games, And More This June

Last year, Sonic Origins celebrated Sonic the Hedgehog’s birthday by gathering Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in one place with new features and some added bonuses. Despite some shortcomings, the compilation remains the best official way to experience those classic games from Genesis and Sega CD three decades following their original releases. Today, Sega announced the bundle is about to get better through Sonic Origins Plus, a premium upgrade that arrives a year after the collection’s initial launch.

Sonic Origins Plus brings forward all the features of Sonic Origins delivered last year – Classic Mode, Anniversary Mode, widescreen support, added story animations, a virtual museum, and more – while adding a bunch of new content. Sonic Origins Plus brings all twelve Sonic Game Gear titles to the museum.

On top of that, Amy joins the roster of playable characters in the Genesis and Sega CD titles (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD). Knuckles will be available in Sonic CD, a correction to one of the most bizarre exclusions from the original Sonic Origins releases. Unfortunately, the first press release doesn’t mention the restoration of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 music.

Sonic Origins Plus is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S (PS5), PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch on June 23. The digital Sonic Origins Plus version costs $40 if you do not own the original release. 40 dollars is also charged for the physical edition, which comes with a 20-page book and reversible covers sheet featuring new artwork.
