Sonic Frontiers gets its first trailer teasing open-world gameplay

Sonic Team Japan released a trailer teasing gameplay for their upcoming 3D Sonic video game. Sonic FrontiersOn Tuesday. The brief but telling 40-second teaser showed off combat mechanics, enemies you’ll face, and a stunning open world.

Sonic is seen running through vast grassy fields while a soothing piano melody plays. Some mechanics are unfamiliar. The blue hedgehog is seen running on what seems to be an advanced hamster wheel, scanning the entire world. Sonic surrounds a robot to create a trail that lights up the sky, boosting the enemy’s visibility. Sonic continues with slow-motion attacks.

The game is being developed by Sega’s Sonic Team Japan and is being led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto. The developers claim that the game will be released in Japan on August 2. Sonic Frontiers is an “open-zone-inspired experience” that will allow Sonic to explore freely. Sega was originally announced Sonic Frontiers in May as part of the Sonic Central livestream to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and later revealed an official announcement trailer in December at The Game Awards.
