SAG-AFTRA strike to have no impact on your favorite actual play series
The Hollywood actors’ strike will likely have little to no impact on the most popular actual play series currently in production. Polygon contacted several companies, including Critical Role Network and Glass Cannon Network. Although some of the talent may have crossed over to the strikers guild, there will be no impact on the streaming series, video-on demand archives, or related podcasts.
SAG/AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) is a union in Hollywood and the United States that represents the working actors. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ (AMPTP), which represents working actors in Hollywood and elsewhere, began its strike at midnight of July 14, over residuals and artificial intelligence. This strike is expected to stop hundreds of film and television productions around the globe.
Hollywood stars have often been invited to the tables of actual play. This has become increasingly popular since the outbreak. SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP are not regularly involved with these productions. Therefore, they won’t be affected.
“We fully support the strike and stand in solidarity with our fellow actors,” Critical Role told Polygon in an email Friday morning. “Currently, our release schedule is not impacted by the strike, but we will continue to evaluate and take the necessary steps should it be impacted in the future.”
Troy Lavalee is the CEO of Glass Cannon. He provided a slightly more measured reply:
We’re extremely thankful that podcasting and live streaming of games is not under any one person’s jurisdiction yet. Hopefully, this situation will remain the same for many years to come. We don’t need outsiders to regulate the way we play RPGs. There are already enough rules. We are all gamers at the end of it, and we want to spread the love for gaming. We are so proud of our ability to transform this passion into an enterprise. Independent organizations like us, which operate with smaller budgets and faster timelines than traditional media, can offer a dignified, equitable space for performers, writers, and producers who are also gamers to share their creativity and passion in actual play entertainment, a still-emerging art form. With a small, but ever growing stable of full-time employees who rely on the success of our content to survive and to have access to health care, there is nothing that would ever stop or slow down the content creation machine that we’ve worked so hard to become.
Polygon is in contact with other bands and will add their responses to this article.
