Reacher review: A Sherlock Holmes show with a massive leading man

A major complaint from die-hard readers is the 2012 Tom Cruise-led 2012. Jack Reacher movie was, well, Tom Cruise. While Cruise has the manic energy to bring something unique to the role, he did not even remotely physically fit the description of the 6’5”, broad-shoulder behemoth from Child’s novels, a fact Reacher-heads will never let you forget. This caused quite a stir, and Prime Video’s latest release, ReacherThe record is being corrected by.

Prime Video’s Reacher The adaptation cast the incredibly massive Alan RitchsonTitansBlue Mountain State The TMNT In the lead role (reboot), he spends much of his time showing off how large and muscular he really is. The man is often shot from low angles, with many small people around him. You’ll be amazed by his sheer size.

So, Reacher fans, this one’s for you. Your very large crime-fighting lad.

What exactly is Reacher?

Reacher is the television adaptation of Lee Child’s acclaimed thriller novel series about a former military police major who travels the States and often ends up in the middle of a dangerous situation. This is the adaptation of the first season. The Killing Floor, Child’s debut novel, and the first of more than two dozen Reacher novels. The book’s plot differs somewhat from the show, but many of the main narrative points remain, and both introduce the audience to Reacher as a soft-spoken, hard-hitting man who travels the country and often finds trouble on his way.

Reacher travels via Greyhound bus to Margrave in Georgia. He then walks into a restaurant and orders a peach pie. Reacher is instantly arrested for the crime. There is tension at the station as Reacher, who arrives via Greyhound bus from Georgia to Margrave, orders a peach pie and is quickly joined by a banker who (convincingly) has also confessed.

Reacher discovers the intricate ways in which this murder was connected to a wider conspiracy. A riveting, intense fight takes place in a prison toilet, along with many other brutal conflicts.

What’s Reacher about?

He is a large, well-rounded man that solves crime. One particular murder leads to many others (including other murders) within a small Georgia town. Reacher seeks out help from the police, even though he doesn’t care about them all. Reacher also investigates a conspiracy deep within Reacher that leads him to unexpected places.

No, seriously, it’s about a really, really big dude solving crime. His quest to find some peach pie.

It is fathercore TV at its best; you could describe the show as Sherjock Swolmes. Reacher doesn’t just punch his way out of his problems, although he can do this too. He is also extraordinarily perceptive, translating people’s minute actions and tendencies into broader details about their lives, personalities, and histories, as well as utilizing a vast amount of knowledge from his time traveling the world. This is an action-detective thriller.

Just one thing to do: Very little bit deeper, Reacher is interested in corruption in small-town America, and the ways that can spiral up towards the highest levels of government and down to severe consequences for local residents (whether they’re involved in the scheme or not). As with many shows that focus on a law enforcement officer who solves crimes, this show also focuses on the role and limitations laws play in preventing violence from occurring when dealing with something more sinister.

Reacher is good then.

If “big man smart, solves crimes, breaks bones” sounds like a pulpy good time to you, you will enjoy this. ReacherThe eight episodes are light and airy, with great fight scenes, clear goals for its protagonist, and some good one-liners. The central mystery leaves a bit to be desired (especially as more and more gets added on top towards the back-end of the season), but there’s certainly plenty to keep you going even through the lulls. If you’re wary of police-adjacent crime procedurals or grossed out by bone-breaking foley work, this may not be your cup of tea.

It’s worth talking about the cast here, since that was such a focal point for the previous adaptation. Ritchson captures the mood of the books perfectly. His physique is a major asset, whether he’s walking in action or simply strolling around town. But he’s also able to hit the “quiet guy who commands attention when he actually speaks” note. Willa Fitzgerald (The TV Series “Scream”) Malcolm GoodwiniZombie) are both up to the task as the show’s main police officers, who are not all always on the same page as Reacher with regards to his penchant for violence. Veteran actors Bruce McGill and Currie Graham are absolutely sinister as some of the season’s antagonists, as is Chris Webster as the stomach-churning KJ. And I’d be remiss not to mention Harvey Guillén’s (This is What We Do in the Shadows Guest plays the role of an overwhelmed local physician who has no experience with all this crime.

Summary: This adaptation is more appealing to Lee Child fans than the feature-length film.
