Prey

Dan Trachtenberg’s prequel to the long-running Predator film franchise stars Amber Midthunder (Hell or High Water() As a Comanche soldier in 1719, who finds out that the prey she was stalking is actually a vicious headhunter from another planet bent on murdering humans for sport.
Our review:
Trachtenberg was the one who also made the similar, pared down franchise extension Cloverfield LaneOne thing is certain about a sane person: Prey: efficiency. It is the story of a young lady who meets an evil alien in a cool skull mask. The other members of Naru’s tribe are there to naysay and/or become Predator fodder. An unemployed band of fur trader smugglers also has some hunting bodies. Trachtenberg is able to showcase the benefits of their brief, but impressive lives by using overhead shots. He may use them for the lay-of the-land shots or give the camera just enough space to see through obstacles such as a sticky mud pit.

Tom HollandSpider-Man has no way home(Stars in) Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer’s 2022 adaptation of the Uncharted action-adventure video game series as Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who teams up with partner-mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to search for the lost treasure of Ferdinand Magellan.
Our review:
The filmmakers have the right idea of what makes an Uncharted action set piece, whether they’re molding a sequence after something from the games, or inventing something entirely new that would fit within one of them, like a bit involving characters battling inside pirate ships hoisted into the air by airplanes. However, the execution of this sequence is boring, inconsequential, or flat. Even a generic action soundtrack, which accompanied the Uncharted song during a dramatic shootout, does not bring joy.
Pixar’s Lightyear

Chris EvansAvengers: EndgameIn 2022, there will be a total of? stars Toy StorySpinoff Lightyear as Buzz Lightyear — the human, not the toy — a Star Command Space Ranger who accidentally crashes his exploration vehicle on an inhospitable alien planet. Buzz finds himself stranded on an inhospitable alien planet and is forced to find a means to make a new fuel source that will power his ship. He must also fight the Zurg’s army of robot killers.
Our review:
Flash Gordon Space Adventure packed with flashy banter, fast-moving alien creepycrawlies and explosive action Lightyear It is very enjoyable. There’s a lot of funny business about Buzz narrating his actions as if he’s the hero in a space serial, and a strange, silly scene about the sandwiches of the future. It’s no wonder all this would appeal to Andy and his generation, who likely see it much like 6-year-olds in our world might: as an exciting rush through a world packed with killer robots, icky monster-bugs, and cool laser swords.
But Lightyear It is clearly designed to become something else: A thoughtful meditation on time passing. All of its major ideas point to the necessity to be connected with people, and to live in the now rather than the future. It’s a warning about all the things we might miss if we fixate on past mistakes instead of letting them go. And on that level, the film never hits as hard as it’s meant to.
Belle

Mamoru Hosoda’s sci-fi fantasy anime BelleSuzu is a quiet high school student from rural China. This story follows her journey. Mourning the loss of her mother, Suzu finds solace and validation by escaping into the massive online world of “U,” where her virtual alter-ego “Belle” is a globally recognized pop singer. Suzu decides to search for the Dragon when one of her concerts is disrupted by an unknown figure. This will help them understand their unspoken relationship.
Our review:
This is the kid-friendly message of Beauty and the Beast (or at least the 1991 Disney version) is a simple one: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” With the ambitious, decisively uncynical new anime movie BelleMamoru Hosoda (writer-director) adds another variation to the long list by adapting the story for an internet age. The internet has made it possible to create online characters that can replace curses and transform magical singing candles into mewling AIs. The director of MiraiAnd The Girl who Leapt Through TimeThe core message is taken one step further, with the emphasis on how connections are a two-way street. It isn’t enough to recognize someone else’s true self without offering vulnerability in return. Produced by Hosoda’s Studio Chizu, this lush, spectacularly animated vision argues for the life-changing bonds that can develop when people shed their digital defenses.
Belfast
What to Watch:On HBO Max, you can watch it live.
Focus Features
Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical movie about a young boy growing up in late 1960s Belfast was at one point an Oscar frontrunner, and it finally makes its streaming debut nearly a year after its release.
From Oli Welsh’s piece on why it deserved to win Best Picture:
Don’t mistake any of this for cynicism: BelfastBranagh’s film is heartfelt and sincere. This film is clear on the heartbreaking dilemma. Should the family move away from the people and places that they cherish? Or stay in the country and be at risk of being eaten alive during the Troubles. It’s also an entertaining movie, and beautifully performed. Although Hill, who is sunny-side up, may be a bit too eager to play young Buddy, Dench, Hinds and Dornan all give charming, committed performances. The beautiful younger couple adds some unwelcome, but not necessarily undesirable, movie-star glamour to the drama in the kitchen sink. Branagh is a master of deprivation and wraps up his journey down the memory lane in an incredibly efficient 98 minutes.
Licorice Pizza
What to Watch: Prime Video is available to stream
Image: MGM Studios
Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film is another contender for the Oscar in 2022. It is a love letter to San Fernando Valley (the 1970s), and the era it depicts. Starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman as well as Tom Waits and Bradley Cooper and Benny Safdie.
From Joshua Rivera’s piece on why it deserved to win Best Picture:
Like Hangout movies Licorice PizzaSometimes it can seem so simple. These films are works of exquisite craft that feel more like effortless strollabouts. This is contrary to what people mean when they describe a film as “awards bait,” which denotes a palpable sense of effort. This is the bias that makes comedies — and Licorice Pizza arguably is one — into difficult awards fodder. But Licorice Pizza is a complex portrait of two young people playing at things that they’re not, a romance that isn’t really about two people in love as much as it is two people using each other to prove something to themselves in the early moments of a tumultuous decade. Gary and Alana feel too scared to discover what the future holds for them.

Rebecca HallNight House) stars in Andrew Semans’ 2022 psychological thriller ResurrectionMargaret is a single mother and a highly successful pharmacist executive. Her carefully planned life becomes chaotic when David (Tim Roth), an ominous and manipulative man from her history, comes back to torment.
Our review:
ResurrectionIt is likely to cause division. It’s actively trying to provoke its audience, which some might find more upsetting than anything that actually happens in the film. And that’s fair enough. But whether or not it’s to anyone’s particular taste, the fact remains that this is an audacious film that asks viewers to take its hand and come along to some particularly dark, surreal, and grotesque places. Throughout that descent, it holds on with a grip that’s tight enough to keep it from spinning out into ridiculousness. It is remarkable that a film so bizarre could produce giggles rather than gasps.

Gru is on the RiseDespicable Me 5, the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise, and the harbinger for many many many memes, is the story of Gru (Steve Carell), a young Gru who rises to supervillainy thanks to the support of his colorful army of mischief making minions.
The following is a review of our work:
Gru is on the Rise: MinionsBenefits from having low expectations. Arriving in movie theaters just two weeks after Pixar’s high-profile, frustrating new science fiction epic Lightyear, the latest extension of Illumination Entertainment’s most popular franchise doesn’t have to be groundbreaking, memorable, or even particularly hilarious to make a splash. In a dry summer that’s light on big blockbusters, Grubs are on the Rise — the fifth feature highlighting gibberish-spouting, indestructible, blobby henchmen the color of bananas (which happen to be their favorite fruit) just has to do its business, get out, and not dawdle in the mind for very long. This is the key. Grubs are on the RiseDoes the job. The film is not a masterpiece nor does it cause teeth-gnashing pain. It’s OK in the moment, and it evaporates as soon as the end credits roll.
