Pinocchio’s live-action trailer makes him look less like a real boy than ever

Disney’s never-ending parade of live-action remakes continues with an adaptation of 1940’s animated movie Pinocchio Later this year, I will be heading to Disney Plus. In the latest trailer for the new movie, we get a look at Tom Hanks’ Geppetto, and a lot of CGI. The movie was also directed by Robert Zemeckis, who is reteaming with Hanks for the first time since 2004’s Polar Express. Pinocchio is set for release on “Disney Plus Day,” the company’s annual day of previews and release news. It falls this year on September 8.

If you have seen the movie, this trailer will look very familiar. Pinocchio the wooden puppet is created by Geppetto toymaker (who also had a scary musical made in 2000). However, this trailer shows him looking a lot like plastic. Pinocchio is then brought to life and dreams about becoming a boy. Pinocchio then embarks on many adventures. These include hanging out with Jiminy the cricket, being sold to a circus and being swallowed up by a whale.

Disney’s string of live-action adaptations of its animated classics started in earnest after the success of Tim Burton’s Alice in WonderlandIn 2010. The effort resulted, however, in films of differing quality, but unquestionable box-office successes. Aladdin, The Lion King, The Jungle BookAnd Beauty and the BeastGlobally, all have crossed a billion dollars. Disney Plus is the home of many live-action remakes. Pinocchio will. These include Mulan, Lady and the TrampAnd the hybrid release Cruella.

Along with Hanks’ Geppetto, Pinocchio Cynthia Erivo, also starring in the film (The El Royale: Bad Times, The Outsider) as The Blue Fairy, who sings the classic Disney song “When you Wish Upon a Star” in this trailer. Luke Evans (also in the film) is another cast member.Beauty and the BeastKeegan Michael Key was the Coachman.Key and Peele) as the voice of Honest the fox, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight RisesJiminy Cricket’s voice.

This is, surprisingly enough, the third Pinocchio-related project at the moment. Along with Zemeckis’ Disney movie, there’s also an adaptation of the original Carlo Collodi children’s novel coming from Guillermo del Toro at Netflix, and a baffling video game called P’s LiesIt combines BloodborneCombat with the wooden doll and the growing nose.
