Overwatch 2 Will Replace The Original Overwatch When It Enters Early Access

The Overwatch 2 team at Blizzard Entertainment asked questions about the current state of the franchise, and its upcoming sequel. In one answer, the folks from Blizz confirm an interesting detail about OW2 when it hits Early Access in the first week of October: it’ll replace the original Overwatch entirely.

We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things coming to the game. We’re launching with new heroes, maps and features, but there are even more of these coming seasonally – every 9 weeks. A roadmap was released recently detailing some of the content. Seasons 1 and 2 will see new heroes, maps and features. Season 2 will feature a brand new map. In addition, the Live Service will allow you to access larger portions of the game which were always part of the vision of OW2 and the PvE campaign.

OW2 will replace the Live Service when it launches Oct 4.

Rather than being a separate app on your console of choice or the Blizzard launcher, Overwatch 2 won’t be built up bit by bit on its own but will take the place of the original game and build off of that instead.

Overwatch 1 & 2 are always intended to be linked together to create a single client. This is the first announcement that Blizzard made public about the fact that Overwatch 1 would cease to exist when Overwatch 2 launches. Get your 6v6 games in now because they won’t be playable as of the OW2 Early Access launch.

This quote also mentions the timeline for PvE content arriving to OW2. Its initial Early Access content this year will provide a revamp to the PvP experience with new heroes, maps, modes, etc., but the long-touted narrative content for the sequel will be coming sometime in 2023 instead of with the rest of the package.

Overwatch 2 is free-to-play on PlayStation 5 starting October 4th on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 4 as well as Xbox One, Switch and PlayStation 4.
